Changes in daily life Entrepreneurs introduce new technologies and begin to make life easier and products cheaper for many Americans • Light bulb • Railroads • Steel (sky scrapper) • Telegraph • Telephone How do you think these products changed life in America?

Some of the Changes in America • Many more natural resources discovered in the west (westward expansion) • Rise in population (immigration) = Larger workforce!!! • More people need more stuff! What stuff would these new Americans need?
Changes in Industry • Mass Production begins takes over in many industries making products cheap and labor more valuable. Machines help this too! • This puts more money in more workers pockets and at the same time gives them new products to buy with that money. What is mass production? Who invented it?
Brainstorm examples of the groups represented in your community. • Do any of these groups face discrimination? • If so, what types of discrimination do they face?
Immigrants • Most come in through NY ( called the “golden door”) • Most choose to live in areas settled by other immigrants • Most face discrimination • The amount of discrimination varies depending on country of origin Why do immigrants choose to live by other immigrants?
Immigrants • Come to America for various social, economic and political reasons (Mostly from Europe and Asia) • Steam ships make this quicker than ever • The journey is not cheap or easy (many get sick due to poor conditions), many go into indentured servitude Why would people go through the expense and the risk to get here?
Where were the immigrants then What areas have the fewest immigrants? Why? cities
Growth of Cities • Millions head from farms to cities • Many wealthy leave the city for the suburbs (cars and trains help) • Restrictive Covenants- agreements not to sell to certain groups of people • Ghetto- areas of cities dominated by on ethnic or racial group Draw a hypothetical map of a turn of the century city!- Flicker
Slums and Tenements • Tenement- low cost apartments built very fast to house as many immigrants as possible • Slum- an area of tenements • Conditions were very poor (soot, open sewers and rats) • Disease common • Fire a constant threat (Great Chicago Fire) • Violence, Gangs & Crime How has modern media and music changed the word ghetto?
