Panama was originally a province in Colombia • In 1902, the US bought canal building rights from France • The Colombian government refuses to approve the Hay-Herran Treaty, which would have given the canal zone to the U.S. for $10 million and $250,000 a year • TR’s “Plan B:” he works secretly with French canal company leader Philippe Bunau-Varilla to engineer a revolution; sends the US Naval Fleet; when Colombia attempts to send troops by railroad, the Americans who controlled the Panamanian Railroad refused them! • Panamanian Revolution (1903): The Canal Zone
The U.S. had written the Panamanian Declaration of Independence and Constitution in advance • Bunau-Varilla’s wife had sewn the first flag! • Construction soon began and the canal opened in 1914. The Panama Canal
