Classroom Procedures and Information Your child is on a wonderful team with teachers who embrace the middle school model If you or your child have a need, a concern or a situation I should know about, please let me know. There is ALWAYS time before school if you need a quick conference or a minute of my time. I am usually here by 7:30-7:45 or after school from 3:30-4:00pm I want your child to ENJOY reading and writing even if it isn’t his/her strength.

  3. Supplies Needed One spiral notebook with 70+ pages (will stay in LA classroom) Loose-leaf paper Folder to keep assignments, notes, etc. Pencils Red pens Highlighters – at least 3 different colors Agenda A novel of their choice Please try to have these items by the 2nd day of school!

  4. Five Parts to Language Arts Reading Writing Listening Speaking Grammar (Conventions)

  5. Holt Elements of Language (Green Books) • Demonstrate the writing process • Explore writing domains (persuasive, expository, narrative, descriptive) • Summary writing • Letter writing • Poetry writing • Analyze and respond to literature • Grammar • Spelling • Vocabulary

  6. Holt Elements of Literature(yellow books) • Read from a variety of genres with accuracy, immediate recognition and expression • Read for comprehension and response • Read from a district approved list of novels • Understand and apply elements of fiction (character, setting, plot etc.) • Demonstrate understanding of types of literature (novel, play, prose etc.) • Discuss literature during book groups and classroom opportunities

Grading • Reading Assessments – 30% • Reading quizzes, quarterly book report, reading comprehension tests • Writing Assessments – 30% • Literary Analysis, journal entries, essays • Vocabulary/Grammar Assessments – 25% • Weekly vocabulary tests, parts of speech quizzes, grammar tests • Homework/Classwork – 15% • In-class assignments, weekly vocabulary charts, reading logs • Gradebook Codes: MI= Missing, LA=Late, AB=Absent, IN=Incomplete

  10. TurnItIn.com Turnitin.com is an online resource that helps students and teachers with plagiarism. Turnitin.com also offers other tools such as peer editing and online rubrics. Assignments/Essays that are assigned on the computer will be submitted to Turnitin.com. Students will be working with this online tool in the classroom. Many students will have an account from 6th grade if they were at student at AMS.

  11. Miscellaneous… Students will have vocabulary test every Friday Please let your child use the computer for school uses. There are many assignments that your student would greatly benefit with the use of a computer Your child’s attendance is extremely important Your child will keep track of all of their assessments throughout the year. Including writing assignments, reading quizzes, vocabulary quizzes, and grammar tests. Learning lab is available for students who need extra time to complete their assignments. It is offered EVERY morning at 7:30am
