Transportation Taskforce Marcia Lochmann, Lewis and Clark Community College Stephenie Presseller, Moraine Valley Community College Karen Stallman, Southwestern Illinois College Tim Gibson, John A. Logan Community College Rich Schultz, Kankakee Community College Stephen Bell, College of Lake County Annie Laurie Cadmus, Wabaunsee Community College Amy Endicott, IGEN
Task Force Objectives • Identify and prioritize how the Network can support, assist and engage Illinois community colleges to participate in, expand and promote alternative transportation, campus fleet management policies and travel policies for staff and faculty. • The task force will develop a white paper which summarizes their findings on the Project Scope and Directives and make formal recommendations to the IGEN Presidents Steering Committee.
Taskforce Objectives: Goal 3. GOAL: In an effort to maximize commuter CO2 emission reduction, each college will have access to a “How To Guide” (white papers) for implementing alternative transit opportunities on campus, tracking CO2 and users, and engaging the community for awareness; and will be able to commit to a review (at the very least a baseline inventory of commuting habits for staff, faculty and students) and potential implementation of alternative transit options on their campus
What is Alternative Transit – What do We Need to Know? Research Successful Policies: • Campus Fleet Management, use and replacement of fleet vehicles (any vehicle managed by Operations)– • incl. models of how fleet convert to/transition from traditional to EV’s or other alternatives • Tim Gibson • College Travel Policies, staff/faculty – • consider hybrid vs. traditional rental, train vs. personal car, train vs. plane, boat vs. bike- video & phone conf. • Stephenie Presseller • Telecommuting policies, staff/faculty - • plus EV taskforces options • Marcia Lochmann
What is Alternative Transit – What do We Need to Know? Research Successful Alt. Commuter Transportation: • Carpool matching/ Car-sharing • Stephen Bell • Mass (Public) Transit • Rich Shultz • Passive Transit (walking, biking, hang-gliding) • Karen Stallman
Committee Next Steps Each Committee member, from their previous research, will create a draft document that illustrates Carbon and $$ Savings (or potentially costs) if specific recommendations are implemented at a College:
Make 2 to 3 recommendations that are relevant to CC’s and may vary in levels of implementation resources, some can be implemented quickly or long-term or etc. • Use & Include in Recommendations: • EPA Tool/Carbon Calculator & Other Examples & Resources for Carbon Calculators • Cost savings/expense? • Think about individual savings/expense per commuter • As well as that of the college • Site examples and what they’ve found in savings/costs and try to relate that to specific CC in IL • EX: Boston CC found that by implementing this Fleet Policy Recommendation, they reduces CO2 by, XX, had an initial start up cost of $$ and eventually saved $$ in fuel. To determine how much CO2, $$ XX IL CC would save, follow this equation: ~~~ • Be mindful of and record other unintended consequences: • Ex. Employee satisfaction • Ex. Student retention
