Workshop agenda • What is Climate Change? • Climate Change Quiz • Becoming climate-smart
1. What is Climate Change? What is climate change and what are its effects?
1. What is Climate Change? Changes at +1°C • The last 4 years were the hottest on record • Winter temperatures in the Arctic have risen by 3°C since 1990 • The number of extreme climate disasters have roughly doubled in the last 25 years • 80% of people displaced by climate change are women • During some past climate-fueled disasters, poor women and children were up to 14 times more likely to be killed than men • THIS IS NOW A CLIMATE CRISIS
1. What is climate change? The injustice of climate change • The burden of climate change impacts falls disproportionately on the poorest, who have contributed the least to climate change. • Limiting global warming to 1.5°C could reduce the number of people both exposed to climate-related risks and susceptible to poverty by up to severalhundreds of millions by 2050.

3. Becoming Climate Smart What is the role of CSOs in the face of the climate crisis? • Given the urgency of the situation and the great injustice of climate change, development and humanitarian organizations can and should: • Advocate for limiting GHG emissions to stay below 1.5°C and support poorest people to adapt • Reduce their own emissions to set the example and limit their own impact. • Support poorest communities to adapt
3. Becoming climate-smart 6-step process Institutionalize these actions in the organization’s strategy
3. Becoming Climate-Smart CARE’s example
3. Becoming Climate Smart CSOs must walk the talk A climate-smart organization measures its emissions, reduces them as much as possible and compensates for its unavoided emissions.
3. Becoming Climate-Smart What are your office’s main sources of carbon emissions? Make a (Word Cloud)
3. Becoming Climate-Smart Annual carbon emissions from your office [insert your office’s total flight emissions in tCO2e] [insert your office’s total car emissions in tCO2e] [insert your office’s total energy consumption related emissions in tCO2e] [Insert your office’s total carbon footprint in tCO2e] Total : [Divide above number per number of staff] Total per staff :
