TECHNOLOGY CHANGES AMERICAN LIFE Satellite technology that was originally developed for the military transitioned to cable television and cellular telephones. By the 1980s, the Internet, or World Wide Web, had been born, reaching the general public by the 1990s. The Internet became the world’s largest database of information where scientists and scholars can share information. 2013 HOUSEHOLDS W/COMPUTER: 84% 2013 HOUSEHOLDS W/INTERNET: 75%
A CHANGING AMERICAN ECONOMY Globalization – The process by which national economies, politics, cultures, and societies mix with those of other nations around the world. Globalization and e-commerce have helped companies do global business and/or become multinational corporations. With the production of services increasing faster than the production of goods, some believe the U.S. now as a service economy. Service Economy – An economic system focused on the buying and selling of services.

WHAT WE WILL LEARN TODAY: What were the successes and failures of the Clinton presidency?
THE 1992 ELECTION Bill Clinton was the governor of Arkansas. He widened his appeal during the election by calling himself a “NewDemocrat.” Clinton moved to the political center by adopting liberal and conservative views. Ross Perot was a Texas billionaire who led a self-funded independent party. BILL CLINTON DEMOCRAT GEORGE BUSH REPUBLICAN ROSS PEROT INDEPENDENT WHO WON THE ELECTION?
CLINTON'S DOMESTIC POLICIES Clinton signed the Family Medical Leave Act, raised minimum wage, increased access to college loans, and expanded tax credits for higher education. Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) – Law guaranteeing most full-time employees 12 workweeks of unpaid leave each year for personal or health reasons. Clinton appointed his wife, Hillary, to look into a program that could guarantee healthcare for all Americans, but never found the needed support. Maybe we can fix healthcare too?
CLINTON'S DOMESTIC POLICIES In 1993, Clinton oversaw the passage of the BradyBill, which placed a five-day waiting period on sales of handguns. The bill also required a background check on the buyer as well. PRESS SECRETARY JAMES BRADY UNDER PRESIDENT REAGAN
THE REPUBLICAN'S GALVANIZE The Democrats had controlled the House of Rep. for 58 of the previous 62 years. Republicans rallied around NewtGingrich and his Contract with America. The Republicans showed up in the 1994 elections and were able to win control of the House of Representatives. Uh-Oh!
SCANDALS, IMPEACHMENT, & TRIAL Bill Clinton dodged scandals from his first days in office: • Sexual Harassment Suit (Paula Jones) • Whitewater Real Estate Scandal Eventually, Clinton was investigated by KennethStarr who failed to uncover any conclusive evidence of Clintons’ guilt. During his prosecution Starr began investigating Clinton’s relationship with a WH intern (MonicaLewinsky). Clinton denied under oath that the two did not have an affair. Eventually, he admitted that he lied. Starr recommended impeachment. Impeachment process started, but was acquitted. “I did not have sexual relations with that woman.”
TERRORISM & TROUBLING TIMES In 1993 – a terrorist group called alQaeda exploded a bomb in the WTC, killing 6 and injuring thousands. Osama bin Laden formed al Qaeda with the purpose of ending American involvement in the MiddleEast. Al Qaeda set off car bombs at American embassies in Nairobi, Kenya, Tanzania. In 2000, they even bombed the USS Cole – killing 17 American sailors.
TERRORISM & TROUBLING TIMES In 1995, a truck-bomb explosion outside the Federal Building in Oklahoma City, which left 168 people dead and hundreds more injured. MEMORIAL: FIELD OF EMPTY CHAIRS The blast was set off by anti-government militant Timothy McVeigh, who in 2001 was executed for his crimes. Until September 11th, 2001, the Oklahoma City bombing was the worst attack to take place on U.S. soil.
TERRORISM & TROUBLING TIMES Serbians (Eastern Orthodox) attacked Bosnian (Muslims) and Croats (Catholic). SLOBODAN MILOSEVIC Ethnic Cleansing - Systematic effort to purge an area or society of an ethnic group through murder or deportation. In 1995, Clinton encouraged NATO to bomb Serbian strongholds, which helped bring about a cease-fire. In 1998, violence started again in Kosovo and NATO intervened once again and forced Serbs to withdraw from Kosovo.
TERRORISM & TROUBLING TIMES In 1999 – two teens went on a shooting spree at Columbine High School, killing 13 people and wounded 20 others before committing suicide. The shooting prompted a national debate on gun control and school safety and an investigation to determine what motivated the gunmen.
COMPETING IN A GLOBAL ECONOMY The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) was passed and allowed for free trade between the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
COMPETING IN A GLOBAL ECONOMY Bill Clinton signed a total of 270 free trade agreements which included: 1. General Agreement on Tariffs & Trade (GATT) 2. WorldTradeOrganization (WTO) The main goal of many of these agreements was to push for reduced tariffs to promote free trade. Critics complain that these agreements favored business interests over environmental concerns and workers’ rights.

AN ELECTION CONTROVERSY The 2000 Election ended up in a controversy between the candidates – Al Gore and George W. Bush. The election was very close and came down to who would win the state of Florida. BUSH GORE Florida was so close that the state had a recount, which declared that the states’ winner was Bush. Gore sues and the Supreme Court stated that the recounts needed to cease and declared that Bush was the… WINNER

BUSH'S AMBITIOUS AGENDA Bush’s domestic priority was education. Congress supported Bush and passed NCLB, which called for improving teacher quality and for making information about schools more readily available to parents. No Child Left Behind Act – Aimed at improving the performance of schools, particularly sanctions against schools not reaching performance standards. Bush pushed a $1.3trillion tax cut through Congress. He believed the tax cuts would stimulate the economy, but it also increased the federal budge deficits.
THE U.S. IS ATTACKED Shortly before 9am on Sept. 11th, 2001 the U.S. was attacked by a foreign enemy for the first time since Dec. 7th, 1941 (PearlHarbor). • 2 planes hit the WorldTradeTowers. • 1 plane hit the Pentagon. • 1 plane was heading to the Capitol or White House, but crashed in a PA field. Everyone agreed that the priority should be find and prosecute the people behind 9/11. Bush called this a… WAR ON TERRORISM
AMERICA'S WAR ON TERRORISM The U.S. quickly determined that OsamabinLaden and his al Qaeda network were behind the Sept. 11th attacks. Bin Laden was believed to be hiding out in Afghanistan and was killed in Pakistan by U.S. Navy Seals in 2011. Bush believed that there was an “Axis of Evil” in the world (Iraq, Iran, North Korea). Congress authorized Bush to use American military force against Iraq to: • Search for Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMDs) • Topple Saddam Hussein’s oppressive regime.
AMERICA'S WAR ON TERRORISM Following September 11th, Congress approved of the following: Patriot Act – Gives law enforcement broader powers to monitor suspected terrorists and detain or deport aliens who were associated with terrorist groups. Department of Homeland Security – A new Cabinet-level position to coordinate domestic security matters among a number of federal, state, and local agencies.
