  2. Immigration • A new wave of immigration came after the Civil War • They came to find better jobs • Brought the non-Mormon population close to the Mormon population

  3. Transportation Advances • Trains spread throughout Utah. Allowing Utahans to go to places like: • Ogden • Saltair • Lagoon

  4. Cars and Planes • Cars did not become popular in Utah until 1920. This is when paved roads came around. • 1910-The first plane flew in Utah

  5. Electricity, Phones, Radios • Utah boasted of the place where the first transcontinental Railroad, Telegraph line, and telephone wires were connected.

  6. Reclamation • Farmers in southern Utah county using all available water sources. • Created water projects to solve the problem. • Built a dam to create the Strawberry Reservoir. • They created a tunnel that went from Strawberry River to Spanish Fork River (3 miles)

  7. National Forest • Albert Potter studied the land to see how Utahans were using the land. • Potter thought we should conserve the land • People opposed Potter ideas because they needed to use the land for business • Two national forests were created and a forest management program was established.

  8. Problematic Industry • Industries become very popular. • They find faster and cheaper way to make goods. • Problems came about as industries came: • Health • Pollution • Poor Working Conditions

  9. Utah Labor Movement • Miner’s began organizing to get better wages and working conditions • Formed the Utah Mine Workers • Strike when faced with 30% pay decrease.

  10. Polygamy Problem Continues • Men that were polygamist before the Manifesto continued to practice it. • B.H. Roberts was elected senator but was dismissed because he was a polygamist • Later Reed Smoot was elected senator but dismissed because people believed he was.

  11. Progressivism • Wanted to make life better for everyone. • Wanted to clean up cities/pollution • Regulate companies that polluted a lot • Regulate Railroad prices • Have safe food • 8 hour work day • Workmen compensation • Educating people with disabilities

  13. Prohibition • US Amendment made the production, sell, or consume alcoholic beverages illegal. • Enforcement was difficult • Reasons for Prohibition • Social • Political • Business/Safety • Religion

  14. WWI • America tries to stay out of the European War • German U-Boats start attacking American ships • Zimmermans telegraph- • US declares war • Victory gardens and War bonds • War ends-1918 • Camp Williams is established in 1914

  15. 1920’s • More people lived in the cities • Jazz became popular • “Talkies” and colored movie • Sports became a leisure activity
