  4. Industry • Daniel Jacklingis the founder of a Kennecott Copper Mine in Bingham Canyon • Mining boosted the economy, but often polluted the environment

Labor Movement • Utah workers join Unions • IWW (Industrial Workers of the World): example of a labor union fighting for workers’ rights • Joe Hill: a fighter for workers’ rights who was executed for murdering a store owner • Thousands of people across the world tried to get him freed or retried.

  6. Government Problems • Congress wouldn’t swear in B. H. Roberts because he was a polygamist • Reed Smoot: a Utah Senator • accused of being disloyal because of his religion

Progressive Era • working to improve social conditions through government • Better life for all Americans • Living conditions • Pollution • Transportation • Need safe food regulations • Working conditions • Taxes • Education for those with disabilities • Prohibition • Movement ended with World War I
