  2. Court System • The judicial branch has two court systems: federal and state. Each hears certain types of cases, neither is completely independent of the other. The two systems often interact and share the goal of fairly handling legal issues. • The U.S. constitution created a governmental structure known as federalism that calls for sharing of powers between the national and state governments. The constitution gives certain powers to the federal government and reserves the rest for the state.

George Zimmerman Trial • On the night of February 26, 2012, an altercation between George and Trayvon in Sanford, FL left one of them dead. • Trayvon Martin, 17, who had been killed, and George Zimmerman, 28, who had fired the shot that killed Martin. • George Zimmerman is being charged with second degree murder in Martin's fatal shooting. • George Zimmerman never denied shooting Trayvon Martin, but he said he did so in self defense. George plead not guilty, claiming self-defense

George Zimmerman Trial cont.... • Zimmerman tells the Police that based on his experience as a neighborhood watchman, the unknown suspect (Trayvon) appears to be up to “no good.” • Zimmerman was acquitted because the state couldn’t prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Zimmerman started the fight. • On March 23, President Barack Obama weigh is, scolding America to engage in “soul-searching” while saying if he had a son, he would probably have looked like Trayvon Martin.

George Zimmerman Trial cont.... • Many law enforcement officers profile people all the time, particularly when assessing whether a situation is dangerous or suspicious. • Sometimes the conclusions or inclinations might be unfair, but making assumptions based on experience is not only human nature, it's an instinctive survival skill for us. • In 1996 the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in U.S. v. Armstrong that racial profiling is constitutional.
