Spiritual Dynamics for the Believer Session 3 Exploring the Need for Transformation in Thinking As Related to the Concept of Yieldedness The Church of the Servant King Pastor-Teacher: Steve Ellis
Purpose • To substantiate from Scripture the need for transformation in the thinking of the believer • To explore the relationship between: • the two influences to which a believer can yield AND • momentum in thought paradigms, attitudes and belief systems The Church of the Servant King Pastor-Teacher: Steve Ellis
Why is this Study Important? Essential to the believer’s conformity to the character of God by means of the Spirit (Eph 5.18) is the need for transformation in the believer’s thinking. The Church of the Servant King Pastor-Teacher: Steve Ellis
The Balanced and Cohesive Soul – God’s Desire for the Believer • God desires for the believer to have a balanced and cohesive soul • A balanced and cohesive soul reflects the character of God • A balanced and cohesive soul only results when the believer applies the concept of Operation KRY • Apart from Operation KRY, the soul of the believer will be imbalanced and lack cohesion • A failure to yield to God is tantamount to anarchy The Church of the Servant King Pastor-Teacher: Steve Ellis
Believer Soul of the Believer • Self-consciousness • Mentality • Volition • Emotion • Conscience Character Of God Know Yield Reckon The Church of the Servant King Pastor-Teacher: Steve Ellis
Balanced/Cohesive Soul vs. Imbalanced/Disjointed Soul Imbalanced/Disjointed: Balanced/Cohesive: • S/C – sees self as God sees us • M – Filled with Truth; the authority of the soul • V – making positive decisions • E – subordinated to the Mentality • C – proper norms & standards • S/C – overly intro/extraverted • M – Filled with Defense Mechanisms; not the authority • V – making negative decisions • E – not subordinated to a Mentality filled with Truth • C – improper norms & standards The Church of the Servant King Pastor-Teacher: Steve Ellis
Two Influences Vie for Supremacy in the Believer’s Soul • The “flesh” (i.e. the sin nature, the old man) • 2) The “Spirit” (i.e. the Holy Spirit) “For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit [sets His desire]against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please.”(Gal 5.17) The Church of the Servant King Pastor-Teacher: Steve Ellis
Two Immutable Rules of the Spiritual Life: • Thought pattern of yieldedness to the “flesh” • = • disjointed and out of balance soul components • Thought pattern of yieldedness to the “Spirit” • = • cohesive and balanced soul components The Church of the Servant King Pastor-Teacher: Steve Ellis
The Balanced Soul • Self-consciousness • Mentality • Volition • Emotion • Conscience The Mentality that is filled with Spiritual truth is the authority of the soul The Church of the Servant King Pastor-Teacher: Steve Ellis
The Imbalanced Soul • Self-consciousness • Mentality • Volition • Emotion • Conscience Other components of the soul manifest greater prominence – the Mentality is either lacking pertinent Truth OR Pertinent Truth is not applied Inevitable Result: Imbalanced Soul that Lacks the Cohesiveness of Truth The Church of the Servant King Pastor-Teacher: Steve Ellis
Momentum in Operation KRY is Essential to Develop a Balanced Soul Character Of God Know Reckon Yield “…be filled with the character of God by means of the Spirit” (Eph 5.18) The Church of the Servant King Pastor-Teacher: Steve Ellis
The Primacy of the Mentality (Thinking) – A Prominent Theme in Scripture New Man Thinking Vs. Old Man Thinking “Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds, and have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him.” (Col 3.9-10) “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.” (Rom 12.2) The Church of the Servant King Pastor-Teacher: Steve Ellis
The Primacy of the Mentality (Thinking) – A Prominent Theme in Scripture Other Passages That Emphasize the Primacy of New Man Thinking: Proverbs 23.7 Romans 14.5 1 Corinthians 1.10 Ephesians 4.23 Philippians 1.27 Philippians 2.2-3 Colossians 3.2 New Man Thinking Vs. Old Man Thinking The Church of the Servant King Pastor-Teacher: Steve Ellis
Life Situations are Opportunities for Momentum & Self-Evaluation • Consistent Yieldedness to Truth = New Man Thinking • Consistent Yieldedness to Old Man = Old Man Thinking • New Man Thinking = Attitudes, Views, Thought Paradigms consistent with God’s Viewpoint & developed via continuous cycles of Trust and Dependence in Him and His Word • Old Man Thinking = Attitudes, Views, Thought Paradigms consistent with Satan’s Cosmos System, Anthropocentricity, “religious systems of good,” & desires/impulses of the flesh – developed via continuous cycles of trust in self and rejection of God’s viewpoint The Church of the Servant King Pastor-Teacher: Steve Ellis
Life Situations are Opportunities for Momentum & Self-Evaluation • Spiritual Principle: Thought patterns develop into a self-reinforcing system (momentum) and frequently become part of the sub-conscious • Momentum in Old Man Thinking = Spiritual Darkness (Rom 1.18-32 • cf. Eph 4.17-19) • Momentum in New Man Thinking = Spiritual Light (Eph 5.8-14) • Systems of Thinking = Belief Systems The Church of the Servant King Pastor-Teacher: Steve Ellis
Life Situations are Opportunities for Momentum & Self-Evaluation • Examples of Old Man Belief Systems: • Environmentalism • Feminism • Socialism • Communism • Fleshly Defense Mechanisms • Self-Centric Rationalism • Works Oriented Religious Systems • Examples of New Man Belief Systems: • Biblical View of the Direction of Human History • Personal Responsibility • Christo-centric ministry • Christo-centric marriages • Grace oriented views of salvation & Christian life The Church of the Servant King Pastor-Teacher: Steve Ellis
Life Situations are Opportunities for Momentum & Self-Evaluation NMT OMT Trigger HS OSN Fruit of the Spirit PS/HG LS 7 M/S A yielded attitude toward God A yielded attitude toward self Note: Fruit of the Spirit = love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control (Gal 5.22-23) Seven Manifestations of the Spirit = develops Christian character, develops Christian service, leads, witnesses with our spirits, promotes praise & thanks- giving, teaches, and makes intercession for us The Church of the Servant King Pastor-Teacher: Steve Ellis
