Abraham, Isaac, Jacob – tribal leaders • Elders • Moses/Joshua – political/military leaders • Judges • Kings • Saul – no heart for God • David – full heart for God • Solomon – half heart for God
“When you enter the land which the Lord your God gives you, and you possess it and live in it, and you say, ‘I will set a king over me like all the nations who are around me,’ you shall surely set a king over you whom the Lord your God chooses, one from among your countrymen you shall set as king over yourselves; you may not put a foreigner over yourselves who is not your countryman.” (Deuteronomy 17:14–15)
In Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream at night; and God said, “Ask what you wish me to give you” … “Now, O Lord my God, You have made Your servant king in place of my father David, yet I am but a little child; I do not know how to go out or come in. Your servant is in the midst of Your people which You have chosen, a great people who are too many to be numbered or counted. So give Your servant an understanding heart to judge Your people to discern between good and evil. For who is able to judge this great people of Yours?” (1 Kings 3:5, 7–9)
…Therefore the people wander like sheep, They are afflicted, because there is no shepherd. (Zechariah 10:2b) “Awake, O sword, against My Shepherd, And against the man, My Associate,” Declares the Lord of hosts. “Strike the Shepherd that the sheep may be scattered; And I will turn My hand against the little ones. (Zechariah 13:7)
Jesus to Peter (Gospel of John 21) • Tend my lambs • Shepherd my sheep • Tend my sheep • The twelve apostles (Acts 2:42) • “The devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching …”
Acts 6 – division of labor Acts 11 – Elders’ identified in Jerus. Church Acts 13-14 – Elders appt’d in Gentile churches. Acts 20 – First extended teaching to elders recorded in Scripture.
Observations • At times God uses unique leaders • Peter (Acts 2, 4) • James (Acts 15) • The three pillars (Gal 2)
Observations Consistency is difficult! But when Cephas came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he stood condemned. The rest of the Jews joined him in hypocrisy, with the result that even Barnabas was carried away by their hypocrisy. (Gal 2:11-13)
Observations Pride is a real temptation! Diotrephes, who loves to be first among them, does not accept what we say. (3 John 9)
