  7. Politically Divided Nations • Division of African continent • Long term rivals are united • Kinship groups split up among colonies • Divisions still plague independent African nations- many civil wars, genocides

  8. Racism/Intolerance • Colonial ideas that black is an inferior race • Even after independence, racial and religious tensions existed • i.e. Apartheid in South Africa until 1994
