Background of UC San Diego • Tier 1 Institution renowned for science/technology research • Established in high income community of La Jolla (Average household income = $80,000) • Total Number of students = 28,800 (Fall 2009) • Average annual costs for students ($25,515) • Average GPA (F = 3.95; T = 3.30) • Underrepresented Populations of Students • African-American = 2%; Mexican-American = 10%; Latino/Other Spanish = 3%; Filipino = 4%; Native American = <1%; Pacific Islander = <1%; Southeast Asian = about 9%
Background of The University of San Diego • Chartered 1949, community of Linda Vista • Roman Catholic. Private. Coeducational. Residential. • 5111 undergraduate, 184 paralegal, 1461 graduate, 1112 law – 7868 total • The average GPA for Fall 2009 entering freshman was 3.9, SAT was 1240 (critical reading and math) • Cost of Attendance (on campus housing) $53,574 • Undergraduate population: Asian 10% Black 3% Hispanic 15% American Indian 1% White 60% International 4% Unknown/Prefer not to respond 7%

USD SSS Mentoring Program • Began Spring 2009 • Based on concepts taught in USD’s School of Leadership and Educational Sciences • Learning objectives: • Critical and Independent Learning and Thinking • Community Responsibility • Cultural Competency • Personal Impact
USD Mentor Requirements • TRiO SSS participant • At least Sophomore Standing • Be in good academic standing as per USD requirements
USD Mentor Requirements • All potential applicants apply and are interviewed • All enroll in one-unit course through the School of Leadership • Taught by TRiO SSS Staff • 20 hours of class time and 20 hours of mentoring service • Post Class Interview • Mentors selected by staff
USD Mentor Responsibilities • Summer Bridge Program Mentors • Mentor Caseload • Mentor One-on-one Meetings • Mentor Reflections/Meetings • Documentation/Written reports on Student Contact
USD 2009 - 2010 Cohort (after 1 semester) • 42 Students = 35 Freshmen; 7 Transfers • Academics (GPA) • > 3.5 = 9 students (1 student had a 4.0 GPA) • 3.49 - 3.0 = 13 students • 2.9 – 2.0 = 17 students • < 2.0 = 2 students • Retention Rate 98% (1 out of 42) • Comparison: 2006=91%, 2007=100%, 2008=86%
UC San Diego SSS Mentoring Program • Incorporated into program about 10 years ago • Based on concepts taught in Community-Based Block Counseling Program at SDSU • Adapted to support students through transitional years at UC San Diego
UC San Diego SSS Mentor Requirements • Take EDS 116 & Mentor Practicum • Cumulative GPA of 2.75 or above • Previous experience working with underrepresented populations • Must be upper division student with leadership experience • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
UC San Diego SSS Mentor Expectations • Attend a week long mentor training and participate in Summer Transition Enrichment Program (STEP) • Attend week long SSS All-Staff training • Meet with student caseload • Provide written reports on student status • Attend weekly Mentor meetings • Attend SSS All-Staff meetings
UCSD 2008 - 2009 Cohort (after 1st year) • 64 Students = 26 Freshman; 38 Transfers • Academics (GPA) • > 3.5 = 15 students (1 student had a 4.0 GPA) • 3.5 – 3.0 = 17 students • 2.9 – 2.0 = 27 students • < 2.0 = 5 students • Retention • Retained = 89.5%; Not Retained = 10.5%
UCSD 2009 - 2010 Cohort (after 1 quarter) • 40 Students = 18 Freshman; 22 Transfers • Academics (GPA) • > 3.5 = 8 students (1 student had a 4.0 GPA) • 3.5 - 3.0 = 16 students • 2.9 – 2.0 = 12 students • < 2.0 = 4 students • Retention Rate • Retained = 97.5%; Not retained = 2.5%
