In this comic, you have to know what a “symptom” is. A symptom is a sign of something. Calvin is trying to show his mom signs of being sick, but tells her so many silly ones that she knows he is faking it. • Do you “get it”?
In this comic, the teacher sends Calvin to the principal because he took the gum out of his mouth and offered to share it. The teacher wanted to remind Calvin that he shouldn’t be chewing gum, not encourage him to share. He tries to blame the teacher for the trouble he’s in with the principal.
When you think about the hidden information and understand the comic strip, you are making an inference!
Practice Making Inferences! • Read the comic strips. Try to explain WHY each one is funny. You will have to infer by “reading between the lines.” Some of the information isn’t “right there.”
Make an inference. Are Jon and Garfield laughing or crying in the last frame? WHY do you think so?
Every time you read a comic, you can practice inferring. Make Garfield proud!
Pets can infer as well. Tell your elbow buddy what is happening in this picture.
