Equipment Purchase proposal Goddard Photo Club
Scanners • Two types of scanners, flatbed and negative/slide scanners • Negative scanners have higher density of photocells and focus on negative but can not scan prints and are usually dedicated to 35 mm slides/negatives • Flatbed scanners scan 8.5x11 area, can have light source on top as well as bottom so can scan prints and negatives/slides • SurveyMonkey showed desire to scan prints and larger negatives, which requires a flatbed scanner.
Scanners • NOTES: • Max. resolution is 6400 dpi for all 3 scanners
How ink jet printers generate colors (50 shades of red) Light red Medium red Dark red Light colors can look pixilated so printers control ink size (so they can make more, but smaller, dots to get a continuous looking gradation). Second, they use light and dark colors (3 shades of grey/black) for continuous gradation.
Dye and Pigment Printers • Two types of ink jet printers. • Dye printers use a water soluble dye • Pigment printers use pigments suspended in a liquid.
Printers • Printer Widths 8.5”, 13”, 16” • If want 16 inch printer, only one printer, Epson 3880 • Many choices for 13 inch • Print Heads • Canon-bubble print head • Epson piezo-electric: more clogs, shorter shelf life • Paper • Availability • Canon paper Glossy: only 4x6 and 8.5x11 • Epson paper Glossy: 3 types. Premium Glossy in 4x6, 5x7, 8.5x11, 11x14, 11x17, 13x19, 8.3x32ft • Cost Epson 13x19 $57/20 sheets = ~$3/sheet (not cheaper than COSTCO when cost of ink added)
Epson Paper with Canon Printers? Can Epson paper be used in Canon printers? Yes-but need profile to use other vendors paper. Can use Color Monkey to make profiles, makes printing a little bit more complicated.
Cost • ~$3,500 currently in Club treasury • ~$2,000 budget for equipment purchase
Implementation • Purchase equipment: • Workstation/laptop • Surge protector ?? • Scanner • Printer • Locking cabinet • MS office ?? • PhotoShop Elements (included with scanner) • Install • Set up log book at workstation • Set up Google docs calendar for users to sign up
Proposed Process First 6 mo.: • No charge for member use (must be member) • At end of 6 mo., Board will review ink usage and determine how to proceed. Potential cost is several hundred $/year for ink if usage is high. Member: • Signs up for timeslot • Obtains key from Scott or other Board member • Provides paper • Records in log book number and size(s) of prints (including rejects) • Records in log book and informs a Board member when a cartridge is low • Returns key when finished
Printer considerations • Cost/print will not be less than COSTCO • Club will have additional maintenance costs • But will allow members more control over printing process, perhaps better quality.
