Computer Information Systems Department Technology PurchaseProposal By Bill Bennett
Overview of Presentation • What we need • Why we need it • How we’re going to pay for it
What We Need • 12 Cisco Catalyst 3560 Data CommunicationSwitches • Cost • $3,774 ea. • Total $45,288
What Does a Switch Do? • Backbone of every network • Allows computers to communicate to each other • Organizes computer resources into Local Area Networks (LANS)
Why We Need It • The Cisco and Microsoft certification courses • Course fill rate of 100% • Serve over 150 students per semester • Current switches don’t support latest technologies • Remote management • Virtual LANs (VLANs) • Layer 3 Switching • routes LAN traffic to remote networks
What is a VLAN Old LAN 1 LAN 2 New LAN 1 LAN 2
What is a VLAN Old LAN 1 LAN 2 New LAN 1 LAN 2
How We’re Going to Pay For It • 2009 – 2010 Perkins Grant • MSJC received $511,494 for CTE Programs • Federal funding that must be spent • Distributed among 17 programs
Enrollments - Fall 2009 • Nursing 2,536 FTEs (18.4%) • Business 1,891 FTEs (13.7%) • CIS 1,840 FTEs (13.3%) • Other 14 programs 7,492 FTEs (54.4%)
Distribution History (2008 - 2009) • Audio/Video $48,702 (9.5%) • Business $33,763 (6.6%) • Auto $23, 115 (4.5%) • Nursing $22,345 (4.4%) • CIS $11,850 (2.3%) • Other 12 programs $214,719 (42%) • Cross All $157,000 (31%)
Summary • 100% fill rate for CIS Cisco and Microsoft certification programs • CIS generates 13.3% of CTE FTEs • CIS received only 2.3% of Perkins funds (2008 - 2009) • Students need to learn new technologies to be competitive in the Information Technology (IT) job market
