  4. Why is then the unemployment rate around 30 %? Why is it so undeveloped? Why is there such a low business activity? Why are young educated people emigrating from the County? Why it has the highest unemployment rate for women in Croatia?

Because of... • global economic slowdown which has a great impact on Croatian economy in general • the problematic privatisation of state industrial assets • devastation during the Croatian war for Independence • lack of commercial investment • inadequate infrastructure • difficult transition to a free market economy

What we need to do • identify development priorities • enable the private sector to realise the opportunities and potential of the County • strengthen the economy which will lead to unemployment reduction • provide infrastructure required for the expansion of businesses • enhance development of the educational system • develop social infrastructure

Wood processing • almost 48% of Croatian territory is covered by woods • 60 000 acres of Slavonia is covered by the oak wood • Slavonian timber, especially oak, is, due to its quality, exported to the countriesof Europe, South America and the Middle East • the products of the Croatian wood-processingcompanies and furniture manufacturers successfully compete with demanding European andworld markets • great potential in possibility of using biomass for energy production
