  1. Status of FAIR Boris Sharkov FAIR Joint Core Team CBM Collaboration Meeting SPLIT, October 2009

  2. Rationale for new White Paper • Cost estimate for modular version presented by architects • Detailed list of site related construction costs worked out • Germany and State of Hesse announced to cover "site-dependent" construction costs outside FAIR project budget (110 M€ based on 2009) clarify cost estimates on different price bases explore potentials for cost savings (Annex 2) clarify impact on scientific community (Annex 3) (presentation of Zb. Majka)

  3. Roofing Ceremony in the new Testing Hall - September 3, 2009 Boris Sharkov – Leader FAIR Joint Core Team

  4. The new Testing Hall for FAIR Boris Sharkov – Leader FAIR Joint Core Team

  5. based on the civil construction and technical infrastructure pre-planning studies for FAIR within the German „ZBau“ procedure analyzed were Modules 0 - 5 based upon a new cost estimate in 2009 for the accelerator complex, that was performed for a major sample of systems, defined as German EOIs (conservative approach) e.g. recent evaluation of several Russian and Polish EoIs are compliant with 2005 costbook numbers Revised Cost Estimate 2009

  6. Civil Construction Pre-Planning handed over to authorities • The architects and planners have now presented their cost estimate for the new, modularized FAIR start version (differing only slightly from a former rough approximation, which was the basis of the first draft).

  7. Development of Project Structure Startversion Phase B

  8. Module 0: Heavy-Ion Synchrotron SIS100, basis and core of FAIR, required for all physics programmes Module 1: Experiment halls at SIS100 for extracted beam diagnostics, HADES/CBM, APPA, and detector calibration. Module 2: Super-FRS for NUSTAR. Module 3: Antiproton facility for PANDA, providing further options also for NUSTAR Module 4: Additional low-energy caves for NUSTAR, NESR storage ring for NUSTAR und APPA, building for antimatter programme FLAIR Module 5: RESR storage ring for a higher beam intensity for PANDA and parallel operation with NUSTAR Modules

  9. Modular Version CBM APPA

  10. Revised costs: 1245 M€ instead of 1027 M€ (2005 prices) Firm commitments: 1033 + 12 M€ Challenge: define project for 1045 M€ that allows excellent physics and serves all communities. This will be evaluated financially and scientifically Status in September:

  11. Example CBM Cave Area – 30% Access strategy Simplify building

  12. Simplifying APPA (Plasma & BIOMAT

  13. Roadmap • Driven by civil construction • Aim for earliest commissioning of accelerators and respective experiments

  14. 10/20 FAIR Administrative and Financial WG 10/16 HGF Scientific evaluation 10/22 FAIR Science and Technical Issues Working Group 10/29 FAIR International Steering Committee BMBF Financial evaluation immediately after: application for funding to BMBF few weeks after: project approved; funding granted 15 seconds later: PARTY!!! Setup of the international company proceeds in parallel Immediate Timeline

  15. Modules 0-3 ensure a physics programme that is still unique, competitive with great discovery potential all FAIR science communities can perform excellent physics from early on the facility can be smoothly upgraded towards the full version of FAIR modular approach does not impede construction of the full (BTR) FAIR facility at present JCT continues efforts on cost savings measures in cc, accelerator design etc… Conclusions

  16. Modular Version

  17. Modules 0-3 de-escalated to 2005 *)110 M€ in 2009, de-escalated to 95 M€ in 2005 prices
