Leadership Together October 12, 2013EDI/ACRS CAREER ADVANCEMENT How to Prepare Yourself for the Next Level Lawrence Y. Matsuda Ph.D.
Session Agenda • Welcome/introductions • Purpose of the session and Desired Outcomes • Instructional method • Self assessment-Four Thinking Styles • Two team exercises and reports • Larry’s experiences as a case study example • Myers Briggs • Asian Stereotypes (vintage 1980) • Tool--Boeing Project Management Approach/Gantt Charts • Tool--Mind Maps • Characteristics of Organizations • Tips for promotion • Team product generated--one Gantt type chart and one Mind Map • Homework--make a plan to follow and monitor
The Four Thinking Styles and Communications Strategies • Facts • Form • Fantasy • Feelings
Two Small Group Exercises • The Pipe Exercise • The Square problem • Reports back from the group leaders
Larry as a Case Study • What is important in this section is that this is all about YOU and NOT about Larry.
Step One--Self Assessment • Myers Briggs Personality Inventory • Extrovert/Introvert E/I • Sensing/Intuition S/N • Thinking/Feelings T/F • Judging/Perception J/P
Step 2- 1980 Asian Stereotypes • Males-quiet, hard working, nerdish, good at math and being technicians but sly and sneaky when they compete and win. • Females-quiet, hard working, good mothers, good secretaries and technicians.
Current Asian Stereotypes • What are the current Asian/minority stereotypes? • Females • Males
Two Tools I used to build my reputation • Boeing Project Management approach supported by Gantt charts. • Mind Maps-explore topics/relationships and help identify what some abstract and idealistic qualities look like in concrete terms.
Gantt Charts • Start with the end in mind and identify all the major tasks necessary to reach the objective and identify who is responsible and when it will be done. Then monitor your progress regularly. See hand-out
Organizations--the sandbox you are playing in • Most people believe organizations are rational and logical. Bolman and Deal state otherwise as they outline four different types. Structural Frame,Political, Symbolic, and Human Resource
Tips for Promotion(case study) • Leverage minority job experiences to gain mainstream job promotions • Letters of recommendation • Apply for jobs & structure your resume to the job description • Contacts are important
Tips for Promotion cont. • Take Risks • What’s in it for me? lens (Wiifm) • Luck-Jefferson quote • Passing Lanes-Fred Brown • Jung’s theory of synchronicity • Non linear causation • How can you support the organizational goals? • Tom Clancy-fiction has to be logical-not so reality • Joseph Campbell’s the Hero’s Journey
Tips for Promotion cont. • Positive attitude • First impressions-interview example • Consult with your spouse or partner • Quotes -Maybe the fear is that we are less than we think we are, when the actuality of it is that we are much much more.-Jon Kabat-Zinn -One person with courage makes a majority-Andrew Jackson
Session Outcome/Product Generated • Small groups • Make a list of all the KEY TASKS necessary to get promoted. • Make a Mind Map regarding symbolic, non rational, religious, intuitive etc. forces that support promotion. • Groups report back
Outcome 2-Homework • Using the list and mind map information construct a personal plan for you to get promoted. Need timelines and tasks which you will monitor until your goal is reached.
