  1. Spring 2010 This newsletter highlights some of the contributions our members have provided to the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife over the last semester. GSO Symposium New Officers of 2010-2011 This year’s symposium was another great success. Twenty-four graduate students presented talks and posters to approximately 147 participants. Congratulations are due to this year’s winners (from left to right): Robert Montgomery (completed research), Kim Peters (proposed research), and Isis Kuczaj (poster). Thanks to all the judges, presenters and organizers for another great year! Please join me in welcoming the new Executive board: President: Emily Johnston Treasurer: Tammy Otto Vice President: Brian Langseth Secretary: Jody Simoes FW Spring Graduates GSO Newsletter Congratulations to this year’s FW spring graduates! Masters: Doctorate Robyn Bailey Sarah Hamer Ivan Orlic Nicholas Reo Ralph Tingley III Matthew Wesener Spotlight This spring, the GSO spotlight committee worked hard to publish another wonderful volume of Spotlight. This magazine is a great tool through which our department can showcase our diverse research and outreach activities and stay connected to the Michigan community. Spring Picnic This year’s spring picnic was a big hit. Along with good food, friends and weather, there was an invigorating game of volleyball to display the many talents of the FW department. The total cost for the picnic was under $400 and about $200 was raised in the raffle. Thanks to the picnic committee for making it happen. We have worked together on events like the Red Cedar River clean-up, Meet-a-Grad video series, and the FW undergraduate club vs. FW grads soccer game pictured above. We are lucky to have such a dedicated and active group of undergrads to learn from and interact with. You can check out what they have been up to at their new and improved website: www.msu.edu/~fwclub/index.html Travel Grant Awardees Community Outreach This spring, the GSO awarded a travel grant to Kara Stevens, to offset her expenses to attend the American Association of Geographers Annual Meeting. Congratulations Kara! Thanks to the hard work of the Outreach Committee, about 350 community members were able to view The End of the Line. This educational documentary highlights the impact that overfishing has had on our oceans. The Outreach Committee organized three well-attended showings of this film, on a department, campus-wide and community level. Accounting Balance at start of Spring semester: $1002.24 Current balance: $1577.60 Member Awards This spring we had the second annual Graduate Student Honors Recognition Social. This event , organized by Sharon Reasoner, highlighted the remarkable achievements of some of our graduate students. Attached is a digital copy of the Awards Ceremony program. Take a look and congratulate some of our spectacular students. Thanks also to Dr. Sarah Hamer for running another mist-netting morning at Rose Lake and introducing more undergrads, grads and community members to the beauty and the science of mist-netting.
