What is Autism? What is Autism? Autism is a mental disorder involving the brain. This makes kids unable to express themselves in words as others. Autism is a mental disorder involving the brain. This makes kids unable to express themselves in words as others.
Diagnosis Doctors test children at a young age. They look for autistic symptoms and watch the children’s behavior
Is Autism Genetic? Autism does run in families. Brothers and sisters of people with autism have a good chance of having autism. Twins have a greater chance of having common autism characteristics. One gene or inherited genes is not always responsible for autism.
Symptoms of Autism • Does not answer to his/her name • Little or no eye contact • Trouble interacting socially • Late speech • Prefer to be alone • Talk in an unusual voice (ex. robot tone) • Rocking, spinning, hand-flapping • Unaware of others feeling
Treatment #1 Facilitated Communication For this method, you hold your child’s arm to the keyboard and they will be able to type down their thoughts. Holding Therapy For this method, parents hug their child (even if they refuse) and the child starts to feel the boundaries of their own bodies ) and it forms a bond between the child and parent .
Treatment #2 Auditory Integration Therapy For this method, your child listens to different kinds of sound to help them with understanding the language.
Statistics • 500,000 people under 21 have autism. • Studies show that two to six children out of every 1,000 will have it. • Males chances of getting autism is 4 times as likely than females. • 38% of people who had autism, don't have autism anymore. • It is estimated that per every 4 million children born in the U.S. every year, about 24,000 of those children will have autism.
