  2. What is Interpersonal Conflict? • Disagreements over ideas, interests, events • Physical and verbal aggression • Occurs between families, friends, acquaintances

  3. Why does it happen? • Arguments • Previous abuse • Uncontrolled emotions • Lack of skills and knowledge • Poor modeling- home, TV, streets, school • Support for violence • Access to weapons • Drugs, alcohol

  4. How can we prevent conflict? • Pro-social skills- understanding the point of view of others; impulse control; problem solving; anger management • Opportunities • Pro-social goals • Choosing the right friends • Modeling • No access to weapons

  6. “…and the survey says…” T or F • Interpersonal violence is the 2nd leading cause of death among young people. • Boys and girls are just as likely to be victims. • An assailant (attacker) is usually a stranger to the victim. • Violent acts are most often planned? • The crime rate is decreasing. • Guns help to keep you safe.

  7. From our good friend, the TV • Unfortunately, we see far too much violence on television. From CSI (Miami, NY, Las Vegas, Burtts Corner???) to the WWE, violence consistently displayed every time we turn the channel. • Is violence glorified on TV? • How does this affect you? • How do you think it may affect a 5 year old?

MVU- the media violence unit • Your task is to investigate violence in the media. • Using the links provided on the next slide, you will investigate various North American newspapers and find 3-5 articles involving violence. • You must record: • the form of violence involved • The relationship of the people involved • At least two factors which may have contributed to the violence, and • A factor which could have prevented the violence.
