  1. Biology Characteristics of Life

  2. Biology- bio= life logy= study of

  3. Can you tell the difference between the following items?

  4. What if you were asked to describe the characteristics living things had that classified them as living? Could you do it? • list characteristics that you think ALL living things share

  5. sometimes non-living things will have SOME of the life characteristics, but NOT all • only living things have ALL characteristics of life

  6. all living things have organization cells  tissues  organs  organ systems  organism

  7. 2. all living things reproduce- make more of their species

  8. 3. living things grow and develop • growth– increase in the amount of living material/structures • development- all the changes that take place

  9. 4. living things adjust to changes in environment • env-surroundings of org • stimulus- something in env that causes a reaction- org’s response to an occurrence

  10. an ex is: homeostasis- regulation of internal env no matter what is happening externally

  11. another ex: • living things adapt to their env • these adaptations are factors that increase their and their offspring’s chances of survival

  12. Measurement • SI system is used • based on metric system • decimal system based on 10 & multiples of 10 • metric prefixes used with base metric units to measure larger or smaller quantities

  13. Lab Safety:minimize hazardsknow proper procedures

  14. After experiments: • hypothesis is confirmed by many experiments may result in becoming theory • theory- explains natural phenomena • many times may not be proven • ex: evolution extinction of dinosaurs • law- known to be true • gravitation, laws of motion

  15. Types of Research 1. quantitative- contains numerical data

  16. 2. qualitative- information not containing numbers; descriptive
