Phylum Porifera: ex: Sponges Characteristics of sponges
General Characteristics • Simplest animal • 10,000 species • 150 fresh water species • Can be any color, shape size (1 cm to 2 m in diameter)
General Characteristics 3 Classes: • Demospongia– spongin fibers • Calcarea (calcareous sponges) – calcium carbonate spicules • Hexactinellida (glass sponges) – silica spicules
Body plan/tissue description • Asymmetrical • 2 layers: Endoderm and Ectoderm • No tissues or organs
How does it reproduce • Sexually – sperm and egg released into water • Collar cells catch sperm and amoebocytes carry it to the egg, larvae leave and grow • They are hermaphrodites.
How does it reproduce • Asexually – reproduce by budding or producing gemmules (can survive harsh conditions) • Regeneration from a tiny part
How does it get nutrients • Filter feed with collar cells (choanocytes) • Amoebocytes take nutrients thru body • Diffusion • Take in oxygen and gets ride of carbon dioxide and waste Porifera filter feeding
Important Vocabulary • Choanocyte (collar cell) = pull water into body • Osculum = opening at top of sponge • Spongin = support and defense • Spicules = support and defense • Sessile = adults attach to the bottom • Amoebocytes = carry nutrients to other cells • Gemmule = protective bud cell
