Location • The Colossus of Rhodes was built in the Aegean sea, 12 miles off the coast of Turkey • The structure was built around 292 BC • In 226 BC, an earthquake hit Rhodes and destroyed the monument. • In 2008 the new Colossus of Rhodes was built by Dr. DimitrisKoutoulas • It stood 100 feet tall to bring many tourists to Rhodes

  3. Purpose • Chares of Lindos built the Colossus of Rhodes • The structure was built in honor of Helios, the god of the sun • It was used as a type of lighthouse. Fire-kindled in his head could be seen from far away

  4. uniqueness • As tall as a 15-story building • Started building in 292 BC and finished in 280 BC • The basic construction was bronze • Pedestal made of marble • Inside filled with stone columns

  5. Ancient foresight • The Statue of Liberty is similar to the Colossus of Rhodes • It is one of the 7 Wonders of the Ancient World
