Muscular System • The Muscular system helps the body move around. • The Muscular system also helps other organ systems contract. • Fact: There are over 600 muscles in an average human body • Fact: All muscles are made of the same muscle tissue. • Fact: Thousands of these tissuesare in a single muscle • Fact: There are 3 different types of muscles: Cardiac, Skeletal, and smooth muscles.
Major Muscles • Biceps • Triceps • Abdomen • Sartorius • Deltoid • Pectoral • Gluteus Maximus
Major Muscles • Orbicularis Oculi • Sternomastoid • Gastrocnemius • Quadriceps • Tibialis • Masseter • Tongue
Skeletal Muscle • Strap muscles - Help move the head • Fusiform muscles – raises and lowers the arms • Unipennate muscles – bends the thumbs • Multipennate muscles – Raises the arm outward • Circular muscles – Controls lip movement
Smooth Muscles • Bladder • Stomach • Blood vessels • Intestines • Smooth muscles are involuntary. That means you cannot control them whenever you want to. • They are controlled by the autonomic nervous system. This system controls many things without us knowing.
SmoothMuscles • They are made with fibers running in different directions allowing them to contract in all directions. • Located in middle part of human body( Digestive and excretory system )
Cardiac Muscles • Cardiac Muscles contract automatically to squeeze the walls of the heart inward. • The Cardiac muscles all work together to perform one function. That function is to make the heart beat. • Located in upper-middle body ( Cardiovascular system )
How muscles work in Pairs • Pairs of muscles can work together to perform simple movements. • An example: The Biceps and Triceps • The Biceps contracts to raise the arm • The Triceps contracts to lower the arm • Pairs of muscles that work together like this are called Antagonistic Pairs
Other Systems • Muscles can be found on almost every organ system. • For example: There are muscles in your heart that contract automatically to allow you to breathe • Muscles can also be found in the ribs; they help you breathe • Muscles are also found in the intestines, which move the waste through the intestines
