Delivering Effective Presentations Alan Firmin – HR Director, Ideas UK
Agenda • Introduction • Less is more • Context • Detail • Summary
Introduction • The aim of a good presentation is to; • Inform • Engage • Get a result
Less is more • If I were to put up a slide which looked something like this, then I would suspect that you would be reading it and not listening to what I was saying. • This is because there is too much information on this slide and then temptation is to make sure you are not missing any of the information • What makes it worse is when the font is changed so that more information can be put on the slide and you are having to adjust your view to read all the information • Then there is the dreaded graph to confuse you even more…… • Then of course the font changes back to large to get your attention but by now your brain is ready to explode because you have read so much information • And then realise that someone is still talking to you!
Context • Audience • What’s your story? • Where did you start? • Where do you want to end up? • What’s in between?
The detail • Create flow • Information, Information, Information • Choose graphics wisely • Emphasise the benefits • Seek questions
Summary • Less is more • Tell the story • Present the facts • Remember your audience • Choose graphics wisely • Emphasise the benefits • Save time for questions
