  1. Week 9 February 25-29 English 9 Common Core Focus this week: W.9-10-3 I can define narrative and describe the basic parts of plot. CCR Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, well chosen details, and well structured event sequences. RL.9-10.1 Read closely to determine what the text says and make logical references when writing or speaking to support conclusions drawn from text. RL.9-10.3 Analyze how and why individuals, events, and ideas develop and interact over the course of a text. RL. 9-10.5 Analyze how an author’s choices concerning how to structure a text,, order events with it manipulate time, create such effects as mystery, tension, or surprise. I can use graphic organizers and take organized notes.

  2. The Plan…for this unit… • Students will expand and enrich vocabulary to strengthen reading and writing skills. • We will build our understanding of sentence structure in order to discuss our writing. Diagramming as our tool • We will examine a professional writer and explore the skills and techniques used by John Steinbeck, possibly apply some techniques to our writing. The Pearl • Writing Assignment #1 • Each student will demonstrate knowledge of basic parts of a plot and narrative by application in writing an original parable. • Writing Assignment #2 • Students will write a literary analysis demonstrating knowledge of symbolism, characterization, and theme.

Bigger Plan…  taking us to the end of the semester and being able to write an essay in an hour. • Students will be expanding and applying all skills learned • by reading a second book and comparing and contrasting the theme of tolerance/intolerance and the human experience. • Students will be researching culture, time, setting, and historical significance and how these elements impact individuals.

Review Lesson 19 5-10 minutes • Read each word for correct pronunciation: Use white boards for quick fun review (quiz tomorrow start of the hour!)   • 3. Monday…Define Parable: cite source (10 minutes) • A quick story of the Passerby By, from the Power of NOW, by author the Eckhart Tolle.A man, a beggar, was sitting in the same spot… ( I finish orally ) • Research using technology, key word searches, cite sources • Make a list a parables you know of or found by researching.

What is their situation at this point? • Keep in mind you will need to write a note to each character. • You will write one compliment / encouragement to Juana and one to Kino. • See next slide for more direction…

  17. The Pearl RAFT Example • Kino, I sit quietly on the floor of your hut each day. I have a perspective like no other. I can see you love your family deeply. I see “the song of the family”(1)., and you as you go through your day. Though you may not speak it you know “the rhythm of the family song” (3). Simply by watching Juana “work the corn for the morning cakes.”(3). Treasure these moments, these quiet times and take every opportunity to show your love for your family. You are a wonderful father and husband, humble and proud.

Writing/ Journal: Persuasion /Argument W9-1-.10 • Write routinely…for a range of tasks.. • Imagine you are a educated time traveler who visits La Paz, during the time which the story takes place. Assess the problems so far; and from a outsider’s point of view write a letter to someone who might be able to help persuading them to take action. • Plan It first: • List the problems • Create a list of adjectives that describe key people • Give a call to action • Begin with a strong grabber! Get the reader’s attention! • Proper letter format: use business letter form • Use proper • Continue guided note taking
