Under the Rule of Otto • 936- Otto became King of Germany • Removed lords that wouldn’t obey him • Made Bishops and Abbots from the Roman Catholic Church loyal to him • Gave Bishops and Abbots government posts, and they supplied him with Money and Soldiers • 951- Expanded Germany south in Italy and took over Northern Italy trading cities • 962- Led an army to Rome to free the pope and in return the pope made him king of the Holy Roman Empire • For the next 90 years, Otto and the emperors who followed him, controlled the office of Pope
Under the Rule of Fredrick • 1152- Fredrick became emperor • Called Barbosa or “red beard” because of his full red beard • Forced powerful lords to promise him loyalty and to work for his government • The Italian city-states, aided by the pope, banded together and defeated Fredrick’s armies • 1190- While leading a crusade Fredrick drowned in a river in Asia Minor • A rumor about Fredrick still being alive caused the people to believe that one day he would come back and restore glory to Germany
Under the Rule of Fredrick II • 1220- Fredrick II became Emperor • Raised in Palermo, Sicily • Known as best educated monarch of his time • Spoke several languages, enjoyed scientific experiments, supported many artists and scholars, founded a church in Palermo, and adopted many Muslim customs • 1227- Fredrick II was excommunicated by the pope • The pope called for crusades against Fredrick II, while this was happening German princes broke away from Fredrick II’s rule and made Germany a loose grouping of states under their control
Under the Rule of Hapsburgs • Whenever an emperor of the Holy Roman Empire dies, the German princes met in a diet • In diets they elected new emperors • In 1273, the princes elected a member of the Hapsburg family, Rudolf • Rudolf and members of his family served as Holy Roman Emperors for the next 650 years • 1493- Maximilian Hapsburg became emperor • Maximilian married Mary of Burgundy and gained control of Flanders, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg by marrying his children into other royal families
Main Idea • During the 900’s Germany was the most important country in Western Europe • Over time German kings began to lose much of their authority to powerful nobles who wanted to rule their own territories • Diet- An Assembly
