  2. Medical Terminology Example • Pt in 212 needs their IV DC’d at 1600 • Check BS preprandial and 2 hours postprandial QD • Give Morphine 4-6mg TID PRN • Pt has hematemisis and rhinorrhea with complaints of myalgia and gastritis

  3. Spelling & Pronunciation • Accuracy is critical • Some words sound the same but they are spelled differently • One letter can completely change the meaning • Memorize terms and pronunciations

  4. Root Words • Root • Refers to structure and function of the body • Gives the primary meaning of the medical word

  5. Suffix • Attaches to end of roots words and changes their meaning • Categories of Meaning • Surgical • Diagnostic • Pathological

  6. Connecting Suffixes to Root Words • If the Suffix starts with a vowel drop the “o” • Hepatoma • Gastritis • If the Suffix starts with a consonant keep the “o” • Hepatology • Gastroplasty

  7. Prefix • Attaches to beginning of roots words and changes it’s meaning • Not every medical word has a prefix • Categories of meaning • Location • Number & measurement • Direction

  10. Deciphering Medical Terms • Start from the right and work left • Identify meaning of the suffix • Identify meaning of the root • Identify meaning of the prefix (if there is one)

  11. Example • Cardiology • Suffix “-ology” means “study of” • Root “cardi” means “heart” • Prefix – none in this word • Meaning • Study of the heart

  12. Example • Polyarthritis • Suffix “-itis” mean “inflammation” • Root “arthr” means “joint” • Prefix “poly” means “many, much” • Meaning • Inflammation of many joints

  13. Medical Abbreviations & Symbols • Shorthand • Many are common, others vary • Use only those listed on the facility’s approved list • If not on facility’s approved list, it cannot be used
