AP World History Writing the Thesis Statement
Thesis • Write a thesis statement that outlines what you plan to address in your essay. • The thesis statement is not a restating of the question. • It lays out the structure of your essay (AP won’t care too much about this)
Thesis Statement • If your thesis statement stated, “some things are similar and some things are different;” that is not a thesis statement. • Thesis statements need to be specific. You shouldn’t write social and economic changes occurred; you need to say WHAT specific changes occurred in the social and economic aspects of the area.
Prompt • Using the following prompt, let’s look at some thesis statements: • “Analyze the social and economic transformations that occurred in the Atlantic World as a result of new contacts among Western Europe, Africa and the Americas from 1492-1750”
Thesis Statement • Example of a good thesis statement: • Changes in the Atlantic world from 1492-1750 were seen in the increase in exploration and trade as well as the creation of a new form of slavery. Despite these changes, gender relations and the power of the Catholic church continued as it had in previous eras. • Europe became the dominant power between 1492-1750 while Africa lost half its population and the global economy now included the Americas. However, small tribal kingdoms still paid tribute throughout Africa and China still neglected to participate fully in global trade.
Bad Thesis Statements: Why? • Between 1492-1750, there were both social and economic transformations. These transformations included the introduction of slaves and exploration. With these changes also came continuities in culture and religion. • While the world was beginning to change dramatically with the global economy, intellectual development continued in Europe along with the isolation of China
Thesis Statements • Should contain the time period given • Should cover the regions required by the prompt • Should give the changes and continuities [CCOT] you will discuss or arguments [DBQ] or similarities/differences [Comparison]
What are the biggest social problems facing America? • What are the biggest problems facing the world during the Early Modern Era (1450-1750)? • Compare/Contrast the economies of the Foundations period with the economies of the Modern Era (1750-1914). • If you had ultimate power at HHS, what would you do to improve the high school experience of Highland’s students?
