Essential Question: What were the defining aspects of the Middle Ages?
Review of the Middle Ages • Time period: 5th century – 15th century • Renaissance will begin in the 14th century and last until the 17th century
Political • Countries are being consolidated and cities grow • Most areas are controlled by Monarchies (England, France) or powerful families (Italy) • Church has political power
Economic • Most people worked on a manor for a lord and harvested the crops • Peasants were taxed heavily • Most people farm; however, trade is growing

Social • Feudalism – society is divided based on land/wealth • Lords, Knights, Peasants • Women have no power • Entertainment – revolved around the Church (singing, dinners, etc…)

Intellectual • Arts – again, revolved around the Church/Bible • Education – nobility and clerics tended to be educated. • Majority of people were not
Bloodletting • Medicine was often a risky business. Bloodletting was a popular method of restoring a patient's health and "humors." Early surgery was without anesthesia.
Medical Treatment • Medical treatment was available mainly to the wealthy, and those living in villages rarely had the help of doctors, who practiced mostly in the cities and courts. Remedies were often herbal in nature, but also included ground earthworms, urine, and animal excrement.
Area/Geography • Resources – used trade to get goods from Asia • A little at a time = expensive • Shipping from the Mediterranean
