  1. Today’s Vocab Monarchy: Right to rule is passed down through a family line (King/Queen) Puritans: Wanted church in England to be more pure. Republic: Form of gov’t where representatives are elected by the people to make, enforce and interpret laws. Pilgrims: Came to America from England so they could practice Christianity in their own way. Anarchy: No government…chaos!

  4. English Colonies • 13 original colonies in the United States by 1700s. • They are divided into 3 sections: • New England Colonies • Middle Colonies • Southern Colonies

  5. Types of colonies 1. Joint Stock- colony started by many investors who fund the trip. 2. Proprietary- when King/Queen choose 1 person to run colony. 3. Royal- Direct Control by King/Queen

  6. The New England Colonies Massachusetts (Maine) New Hampshire Massachusetts Connecticut Rhode Island

  7. New England Economy • Ship Building, fishing, and trading, self-sufficient farming

  8. Reasons for coming • Religious beliefs: Pilgrims • Some people didn’t like the Church of England. • They wanted the Church to be more pure. • Religious Freedom

  9. Puritans- stay with church but just reform the church Pilgrims- separate from church completely

  10. Colonial Life • Massachusetts and Connecticut had laws saying that if there were 50 families, a teacher needed to be hired and a school setup. • These schools were called grammar or writing schools.

  11. Schools • Boys went to grammar schools while girls went to dame school. • There was no chalkboards, maps, or paper. • School teachers were strict and were allowed to hit their students or make them wear a dunce hat.

  14. New England Colonies Rhode Island Roger Williams • Founded by/Leader: • By Roger Williams & Anne Hutchison • Why? • Escape religious intolerance of Mass. Colony (Pilgrims) • Important Info.: • Guaranteed religious freedom

  15. New England Colonies New Hampshire • Founded by/Leaders: • John Wheelwright • Why? • Escape religious persecution from Mass. Colony (Pilgrims)

  18. Middle Colonies Pennsylvania William Penn • Founded by/Leader: • William Penn • Why? • Area where Quakers could live according to their beliefs. • What is a Quaker? • Believed in equality among men and women, non violence, no slavery or dancing

  20. Southern Colonies VA • The Southern Colonies included: Maryland (MD),Virginia (VA),North Carolina (NC),South Carolina (SC), and Georgia (GA). NC SC GA

  21. Southern Colonies Economy • Slavery and agriculture (plantations made slavery necessary) • Tobacco • Cash Crop

  24. Southern Colonies • The Carolinas • Founded by/Leader: • By Proprietors ( Private Land Owners) • Why? • Land wealth • Important Info.: • Main crops include tobacco (NC), rice and indigo (SC) • N.C. & S.C. became separate in 1691

  25. Southern Colonies Georgia James Oglethorpe • Founded by/Leader: • By James Oglethorpe • Why? • Serve as a shield against Spanish Florida • Important Info. • A refuge for English debtors (One that owes something to another)

  26. How did the English colonies deal with labor shortages? 1. Indentured servants: a person acted as a servant for a set period of time in exchange for the cost of passage from England to the colonies. 2. Slavery: Brought by Dutch traders to colonies. Slaves were viewed as property and forced to work without pay.
