  1. WELCOME toWhiteness Primary School Coffee Morning and Launch of Readathon and the First Minister’s Challenge

  2. What is Readathon? Readathon does something amazing. They get children reading for fun through their sponsored read in schools. The money raised provides children's hospitals with regular storyteller visits, plus a mobile bookcase jam-packed full of brand-new books, which are replenished every six weeks.

  3. Please sponsor your child to read as many books as they can. The school will benefit too as we get 20% of the sponsorship money to buy new books for school.

  4. Star Readathon Pupils If we raise £50 or more then we will receive £5 National Book Tokens to award to our star readers.

  5. What is the First Minister’s Reading Challenge? • The Scottish Government believe that reading has the power to change lives and that developing a love of reading in childhood can have a huge impact on educational attainment and future wellbeing. The First Minister wants to make sure every child in Scotland has an equal opportunity to experience the huge benefits that reading for pleasure brings.

  6. What are the aims? • The First Minister’s Reading Challenge aims to build on the work already taking place in schools across the country to encourage children to read widely, explore a range of books and develop a love of reading. The main focus of the Challenge is to encourage reading for pleasure and support schools, libraries and communities to build reading cultures.

  7. What are the rewards? • There will be a range of prizes awarded in June 2017 for schools and pupils to celebrate their reading journeys. The Challenge will also give the opportunity for every child’s personal achievements to be recognised by their teachers and librarians.

  8. What do you need to do? • Your child will come home with a sponsor card for Readathon AND • If your child is in P4-7, they will come home with a First Minister’s Reading Challenge Passport. • They will keep a record of the books they read on the sponsor card and for P4-7 the Passport too. • Please encourage your child to read and to make that reading meaningful by choosing to read age appropriate books.
