  2. Deciduous forests- location • Deciduous biomes are located primarily in the eastern half of the United States, Canada, Europe, parts of Russia, China, and Japan

  3. Temperate deciduous forests are located in the eastern part of the United States and Canada, Europe, parts of Russia, China, and Japan.

  4. Deciduous forest- climate The average temperature of the temperate deciduous forest is 50 degrees F. The average amount of rainfall is 30-60 inches a year. During the winter months, water is not generally available to keep the leaves of some plants alive. On the left side, the picture shows the average amount of rainfall.

  5. Deciduous Forest-Plant adaptations • Skunk cabbage- smelly scent to warn animals to back off. • Dogwood trees- dark bark, green leaves. • American chestnut- toxin that also warns animals to back off. • Guelder rose- grows in heavy clay and acidic soil. • Spruce trees(conifer)- have little pointy pine needles as a special defense mechanism. • Hickory trees- Y or V- shaped leaves.

  6. Deciduousforests– Animal adaptations • Gypsy moths- Gypsy moths build web-like domes around their eggs. • White tailed deer- White tailed deer have a few adaptations. They use their tails as warning signs for other deer and use their antlers to fight for a mate or defend themselves. • Squirrels- Squirrels have big, bushy tails for warmth, balance and cover. Also, they are resistant to snake bites and run up & down trees at amazing speeds. • Rabbits- Their ears help the rabbit listen to the quietest of the sounds made by close predators. The hind legs of rabbits are long and very strong. These help them hop at a very fast speed. The feet are padded with fur to remove the shock of landing.

  7. Deciduous forests- Animal adaptation • Red foxes- they have acute hearing and a keen sense of small • Wolves- Some of the adaptations of the gray wolf are that they have thick, wooly fur that gives them insulation and keeps them dry. They have large paws that help give them support and traction when walking in the snow. • mouse- Examples include the ability to swim, the long pointed teeth that let it chew through hard seeds and other foods, the ability to digest many different types of foods and being small enough to hide in tiny places. • Waxwing- they are the most often seen in flocks of 40 or more often nosily descending en masse on a fruit- laden tree and making work of stripping it bare.
