Temperate Deciduous Forest By: Kyle Munn Ethan Still
Location • Location of biome: Primarily located along the tropic of cancer in the eastern United States, Canada, Europe and parts of Asia, and Japan.
Climate As the diagram indicates, the average annual temperature ranges up to about 20 C down to freezing. Precipitation ranges from around 50 cm yr-1 in the colder regions to over 200 cm/yr. •Seasons are spring, summer, autumn, and winter. •Temperate Deciduous Forest has about 14 inches of rain in the winter and about 18 inches in the summer.
Soil within the biome • Soil: Most rich soil in the world. Result of thousands of years of plant life.
Plants • Plants • Plants in this biome are adapted to live with the moderate rainfall they get. • A lot of the trees have large leaves that collect water and create shade. • American beech-grows best in deep, moist, well drained soils • Carpet grass-rootless plant. Grows on stream beds • Common lime-insects attracted by the abundant nectar pollinate them • Pecan-uses the shallow root system • White birch-bark peels and falls off easily to grow new • White oak-uses taproot during drought to get water
Animals • Animals have to be adapted to hot summers and cold winters. Most are equipped with a thick coat that is shed in the summertime. Animals like bears hibernate through the winter so that food and water, which may be difficult to find, will not affect them.
Endangered Species • Endangered species • Bison- due to over-hunting and habitat loss • Endangered Species Act (16 U.S.C. 1531-1543). • This Act prohibits the importation, exportation, taking, and commercialization in interstate or foreign commerce of fish and wildlife, and plants that are listed as threatened or endangered species.
Threats to the Biome • Urbanization is having the biggest effect on deciduous forests, chopping down trees and building developments are depleting forest land.
