Introduction • Have you ever wondered why it was called the Cold War? The reason was because there really wasn’t a lot of fighting with guns. Most of the fighting was economic pressure, selective aid, diplomatic maneuver, propaganda, assassination, low-intensity military operations and full-scale proxy war(proxy war means a war instigated by a major power that does not itself participate). This lasted from 1947 until the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. The Cold War saw the largest conventional and the first nuclear arms race in history.
Why did it start/Who was involved • The Cold War started with the end of World War 11. The United States and the Soviet Union fought because the Soviets wanted to control other countries and they asked the Americas to help them fight. Even though there wasn’t a lot of head on fighting there still were some battles. I will tell you some facts some of these battles.Such as The Korean War, The Bay of Pigs Invasion, The Cuban Missile Crisis, and theVietnam War.
The Korean War • First up is The Korean War. The Soviets Declared War on the Japanese Empire and in August invaded Korea from the north. President Truman ordered the landing of US troops in the south. The Japanese surrendered to the Soviets in the north and the Japanese surrendered to the Americans in the south. Now Korea was controlled by two different major powers. In the early hours of June 25, 1950 North Korea launched a surprise attach with an overwhelming amount of manpower and guns. Within days South Korea was in full retreat. President Truman went to the United Nations to ask for them to help fight the north. The Americans organized Task Force Smith, and on July 5 engaged in the first North Korean-U.S. clash. It failed, the task force was in full retreat. A half strength division confronted them and was soon defeated. Now only about 10% of the Korean peninsula was in the collations hands. Then a new General Mathew Ridgway managed to regroup the UN forces and slowly drive back the opposing forces. The rest of the war involved very little territory change and a lot of peace negotiations.
The Bay of Pigs Invasion The Bay of Pigs Invasion is the second battle on our list. The Bay of Pigs invasion was an US planned invasion in 1961. It was an attempt to overthrow the communist government in Cuba. The governments had tensions growing but increased when the Cuban government started to shift towards the Soviet Union. However the invasion failed miserably and was a major embarrassment towards the Kennedy administration. The start of the invasion was when three light bombers with markings from the Revolutionary Air Force in Cuba bombed the Cuban airfield of San Antonio de Los Baños. But because the Cuban government did not do anything specifically to the Americas the CIA had to give a cover story for attacking. So what they did is remove, shoot, and reassemble the engine cowling to a plane. That way it looked like they shot first. Their main plan was to destroy all of their planes, however somehow Cuba knew about the invasion and moved all their planes to a safe place. So they missed all of the airplanes. This is the main reason the battle was lost.
The Cuban Missile Crisis • The third battle is the Cuban Missile Crisis (this was a different conflict from the Bay of Pigs Invasion). This was actually a more of a conflict between the Soviet Union and America. It was over the deployment of nuclear missiles in Cuba. It began on October 14, 1962 and lasted for 38 days. What happened is that the Soviet Union thought some nuclear equality was necessary. The Soviets started to focus mainly on missiles instead of conventional armies. When Kennedy finally figured it out he had a press conference saying any attack from Cuba would be taken as an attack from the Soviet Union. So Kennedy resolved to set up a naval blockade to prevent missiles from being launched. America was a little surprised at the solid support from their European allies. Finally they agreed to a compromise that the US would not fund or support an attack on Cuba.
The Vietnam War The last and final battle on our list is The Vietnam War. The Vietnam War or Second Indochina War was a conflict between the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (DRVN, or North Vietnam), allied with the National Liberation Front (NLF, or "Viet Cong") against the Republic of Vietnam (RVN, or South Vietnam), and their allies—notably the United States military in support of the South. The Vietnam War began as a civilwar to determine if it was to be a unified nation or a separate one. The fighting began in 1957 and with US and Soviet Chinese involvement it would spill over into neighboring countries. South Vietnam and the US portrayed the war as a strategic opposition to communism. North Vietnam and its Viet Cong allies portrayed it as a war to unify the country from invading enemies. There was fifteen years of fighting and massive army and civilian casualties. US involvement ended with the signing of the Peace Accords in 1973. The People’s Army Of Vietnam and The Viet Cong forces overthrow theArmy of the Republic of Vietnam for the end of the war.
Conclusion It’s called the Cold War because there weren’t a lot of battles. Most of the fighting was economic pressure, selective aid, diplomatic maneuver, propaganda, assassination, low-intensity military operations and full-scale proxy war. The Cold War lasted from 1947 until 1991 the collapse of the Soviet Union. However there was some battles such as The Korean War, the Bay of Pigs Invasion, Cuban Missile Crisis, and the Vietnam War. These were the main battles in the Cold War that I told you about.
