What are Halogens? • Halogens are elements that are found in the VIIth group of the periodic table • Since they are in group VII they all have a Valency of -1
Elements • The elements in the group are : Fluorine- F9 -2,7 Chlorine- Cl17 -2,8,7 Bromine- B35 -2,8,18,7 Iodine- I53 – 2,8,18,8,8,8,1 Astatine- At85 – 2,8,18,32,8,8,8,1
State of Matter • Halogens can be found in the form of all three states of matter-solids, liquids, gas • Fluorine and chlorine are found in the gas form • Iodine and astatine are found in the solid form • Bromine is found in the liquid form
Reaction with metals • When Halogens react with metals they form the metal salt • Halogen literally means salt former Iron + bromine iron (III) bromide.2Fe(s) + 3Br2 (l) 2FeBr3(s) • These then form large structures known as metal halides
