Physical Changes + • Sexual Development -Puberty- time of sexual maturation -Hormones- chemical regulators that controlprocesses likeemotions,growth, sexuality • Physical Growth -Growth Spurt- rapid increase in growth • Maturation Rates -Early Maturer vs. Late Maturer • Eating Disorders -Bulimia nervosa- binging on food by vomiting or using laxatives. -Anorexia nervosa- severe loss of weight from excessive dieting.
Cognitive Development • Piaget --Formal Operations- can reason in abstract ways Ex. Form own opinions on things like religion, can pick out things like hypocrisy. • Kohlberg --Postconventional- right/wrong is based on basic principles. Rationalization-explaining unpleasant emotions.
Social Development • Erikson’s Stages of Social Development- Identity (feeling of oneself as unique) vs. Identity confusion (uncertainty about who one is) • Marcia’s Stages of Identity • Identity Achievement- identity through searching • Moratorium- searching but not figured out yet • Diffusion- No commitment; don’t really care • Foreclosure- make a commitment through no searching or crisis
Social Development • Characteristics of searching for an Identity— 1. Rebellion 2. Self-ishness 3. Optimism and Energy • Role of family- arguments with adults more frequent and intense during adolescence. Parents struggle with letting go • Rite of passage: specially recognized and ritualized change in status, such as adulthood
Gender Differences • Gender Role- socially acceptable male/female behavior • Androgynous – blend of both male and female acceptable behavior • Male/Female Differences • Males more confident • Males more aggressive • Men talk more/interrupt more • Women use more tag questions like “I may be wrong” or hedges like “you know” • Very little cognitive Differences
