GenSet Test Update, Lubrication Oil Analysis,Soot Analysis Nick Johnson 3-4-08 NBEL Wayne State University
Engine Update • 212 Hours of 240 Run on RKA-ULSD as of this morning • Able to get smoke meter results with regularity • Start Up and Shut Down Procedures Written for Engine, Load Bank, and Data Acquisition
Plan of Work - Diesel Soot Dilution in Lubrication Oil • Analyze the effects of soot on lubrication oil viscosity • Measure vs three set standards 0%, 2% and 5% soot levels diluted in unused lubrication oil • Measure viscosity of 2 sets of data from each fuel (120 and 240 hrs) ran at 2 temperatures (40C & 90C) • Compare test results vs standards to measure soot levels and viscosity variances between each fuel • Compare results vs published results
Plan of Work - Diesel Soot Dilution in Lubrication Oil Standards Matrix Samples Matrix
Future Work • Develop Standards for Used Oil Analysis • 0%, 2%, 5% Soot Levels (5% seen as highest levels in literature search) • Analyze standards on Viscometer?? • Test Used Oil Samples at half and full-life of test (120 hrs and 240 hrs) • Finish Plan of Work • Perform Other Military Suggested Testing: ASTM 893-05a and 3524-04, and fuel injector coking
