  1. Louis Pasteur- b.1822 Prof of Chemistry Alcoholic fermentation Formulated Germ Theory of Infectious Diseases Pasteurization Vaccination against chicken cholera(Pasteurella) and against anthrax (Bacillusanthracis) Robert Koch- b. 1843 Physician Anthrax Laid foundations for Koch’s Postulates Isolated tubercle bacilli and cholera vibrio (Vibrio cholerae) Founding Fathers of Microbiology

  2. Pasteur “Recueil allemand” = Compilation of German works Koch Translated wrongly as “Orgeuil allemand” = German arrogance The Rivalry

  3. Pasteur’s Legacy • Predicted that innocuous organisms for human or animals might become virulent by repeated passages through a species that they invade.

  4. Koch’s Legacy Koch’s Postulates • The same pathogen must be present in every case of the disease • The pathogen must be isolated from the diseased host and grown in pure culture • The pathogen from the pure culture must cause the disease when it is inoculated into a healthy, susceptible animal • The pathogen must be isolated from the inoculate animal and must he shown to be the original organism
