GEORGE WASHINGTONThe Father of Our Country • Served as an officer in the French and Indian War (1754 – 1763). • Commander of American Army during the Revolutionary War (1775 – 1783). • Signed Constitution. • Became the 1st President of the United States, and the only unanimously elected president. • Set the precedent to serve only two terms of office.

  3. JOHN ADAMSFirst President to live in Washington DC • First Vice President. 2nd President of the US. • Boston attorney. • He defended the British soldiers involved in the Boston Massacre in 1770. • Signed Declaration of Independence.

  4. THOMAS JEFFERSONAuthor of the Declaration of Independence • 3rd President of the US. • Anti-federalist. • Served as the first Secretary of State. • Purchased the Louisiana Territory, doubling the size of the then United States. • Against the institution of slavery, although he had many, and had a long-term relationship and several children with one of his slaves, Sally Hemmings.

JAMES MADISONThe Father of the Constitution • 4th President of the US. • Author of the Virginia Plan. • Co-authored the Federalist Papers with John Jay and Alexander Hamilton. • Although he was originally opposed the idea, he helped write the Bill of Rights. • President during the War of 1812.

  6. SAMUEL ADAMS • Cousin to president John Adams. • Boston brewery owner. • Created a secret organization of American patriots called the “Sons of Liberty”. • Signed Declaration of Independence.

  7. BENJAMIN FRANKLIN • Wrote the Silence Dogood Letters and Poor Richard’s Almanac. • Served as a foreign diplomat during the Revolutionary War and helped secure a French Alliance for the Colonies. • Signed Declaration of Independence & Constitution. • Oldest member at the Constitutional Convention. ALEXANDER HAMILTON • Raised in the Caribbean. • Served as Chief of Staff to George Washington during the American Revolution.  • Signed Constitution. • Co-authored the Federalist Papers with John Jay and James Madison. • Became the first United States Secretary of the Treasury.  • Killed in a duel with then vice president Aaron Burr.

  9. JOHN HANCOCK • One of the wealthiest men in the 13 Colonies, having inherited a profitable shipping business from his uncle. • Most famous signature on the Declaration of Independence. • President of Second Continental Congress.

  10. PATRICK HENRY • “Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, Almighty God! I know not what course others may take; but as for me, Give me Liberty, or give me Death!” • Leader of the Anti-Federalist Party which was against ratification of the Constitution; because of his persistence, a Bill of Rights was eventually added to the Constitution.
