  8. Statewide Reference Project Update INTRO Over the past several months, we have been creating a plan for rethinking and retooling the Statewide Reference model. Our plan has been built on past surveys and studies, and is designed to gather more data to complete our understanding of information usage, and to create a process that will help us truly innovate how we can best provide information services to our communities. THE PLAN STAGE 1 STAGE 2 STAGE 3 STAGE 4 STAGE 5 APRIL 2008 THINK TANK PREP CLA 2008 STATEWIDE INPUT END 2008-2009 BUILDING IT DEC-MARCH 2008 DATA COLLECTION FALL 2008 THINK TANK • Think Tank Creators • group to meet with • futurist facilitators to • design a statewide • reference think tank • process. • This group will also • look at all of the data • gathered relating to • statewide ref., and • develop new • combinations to help • the think tank be more • informed. • Participants from • across the state will • gather for 1 ½ days to • think about information • trends and data, and • create 3 scenarios for • what statewide ref. • could become. • Presentations at CLA • and other venues will • be given to share data • and the 3 scenarios. • Input from participants • will be gathered. They • will be asked to identify • what scenarios or pieces • of scenarios they think • would be most beneficial • to all. • A Builders Group will • be formed to analyze the • feedback from the input • sessions, and to develop • an action plan for creating • the new statewide • reference model. • ZOGBY polls to • understand how • Californians find • and use info. • Poll I via email was • completed in • January 2008 • Poll 2 link via library • websites statewide • to be completed in • March 2008. Thoughts from Zogby Snapshot • Searching for information begins with a broad casting of the net with search engines like Google. • How can libraries make their resources a part of a search that is broad vs. making users figure out which pond (database or specific resource) to fish in? • When users do choose to use library resources, they expect for us to have specialized info to supplement information to what is found on the Internet or Do-it-yourself information. • Reinforces our need to be very aware of community interests in collection development. • By the time most users are asking libraries for help, they have already been searching. Staff must be experts in all of the “dark” or non-Googled searched information spaces. • Participants cited do-it-yourself information as an important resource, but it also seems to relate to the idea that they would also like to be able to do/find information themselves. How easy do we make this process? • Generally people are satisfied with what they find at their local library when they are searching for information. When they are dissatisfied, it is because there were not enough resources available. • Are people not finding resources because they are not there or because it is not clear what is available? How can libraries make their resources/services more explicit? • There is support for the library to offer more online services to the public to access them over the Internet. More access to resources (full-text articles, self -help guides, downloadable audio and ebooks, test prep) is highly supported. There seemed to be less interest in immediate assistance from a person online. AskNow, California’s current online reference service, is not part of most people’s information seeking behavior. • How can we connect people to the librarians and other information experts in a way that delights people and becomes viral (spreads rapidly as a service by word or mouth)?

  10. Everything You Know Is Wrong The Media of the Online Library People (MOLP) has once again rewritten history. Based on recent sightings at the Library Spa in Calistoga, MOLP has determined that Elvis is indeed alive and well. While Elvis was not available for comment at press time, MOLP is confident that the wisdom of the online community has once again corrected the myths filtered through traditional media. Facilitated by California public Libraries, MOLP provides a tool to allow individuals to contribute to the definition of reality. Relax * Reconnect * Recharge Be Careful What You Think in California Libraries Jill Slater, equipped with the Z chip, went to the Coronado Library last week. Her concerns about her love life were converted to a question and transmitted to a librarian reading a computer screen. Seconds later, she knew it made more sense to join her boyfriend Frank at a ball game than to go with Jack, whom she met on the Internet, to the beach. Library Spa Voted # 1 travel destination by China Daily Readers Plastic Mining : The New Frontier The recent boom in customizable, single-use media, coupled with the need for eco-friendly materials, has led to an increased demand for recyclables. The answer? Plastic! It is plentiful and easily lends itself to molecular restructuring. As an added benefit, landfill reclamation projects enhance quality of life by converting trash heaps to community open space. Governor Caught With Fake Edu-Badges California Governor Hannah Montana was discovered to have falsified her Edu-Badge – the insignia for cinemagraphic economics and urban legends were never officially issued by the Library. Opposition party calls for recall….

  11. Truthiness Database Hacked! People Flock to the Library Lines formed, and users were turned away as people swarmed to the library after the startling revelation that the truthiness database had been hacked by cyber-saboteurs. “We haven’t seen crowds like this since the great network outage of 2018.” said Librarian Nicole Schulert of the Colbert Community Library. With the database down, cyber communing ground to a halt, e-trading went offline due to loss of verification, and myfriendthedoctor.com warned users that the truthiness standard had been lowered a full point. “Our Librarians are standing by to vet truthiness the old fashioned way!” said Schulert, “we will help you remember what your favorite color is.” Can’t Stop Arguing with Your Avatar? Libraries Now Offer Information Mediation Classes Identity Guard Latest in Virtual Bodyguard Market Dr. Rankin North announced the formation of Identity Guard, latest competitor in the hot virtual protective market. “People exchange chips without knowing the consequences, like potential personality shifts. Libraries, community centers, and others are unwitting partners in this travesty. Our intelligent agents will protect you!” North, a long time critic of chip exchanges, has been known for his advocacy in the area of restricting chip information. Library Offers Community Chip Exchange Knowledge sharing is now free at the library where you can exchange chips with a starlet, an entrepreneur, or a gold medal athlete, and know what they know. “I enjoyed the knowledge of being rich and famous, though I had to buy a whole new wardrobe as my favorite color became green.” said user Steve Lim. Chip exchanges, a popular passtime, allows virtual sharing of knowledge such as how to build a house, run a company, fix dinner, or water ski. The library now offers chips for loan, for up to a month at a time. Late fees may apply, so you can’t be a movie star forever. Frienemy Fraud on rise! Credits increasingly distributed for bad advice. Meant to build awareness and could be used locally to point to resources • Question of the Day Contest – Libraries subscribe • Visual mappingto help people find dark collections and staff/experts to help – would build off of a personal profile • Invite the public toplay/hack library datathat relates to check out materials etc…invitation to create mash-ups – have a contests • Question answering that is not tied to specific platform– facilitate other people doing for themselves – serendipity – not anonymous • Find partners to facilitate the role of librarians to validate information – addressing the truthiness of information
