5.ESS1: Earth’s Place in the Universe • 1) Explain that differences in the apparent brightness of the sun compared to other stars is due to their relative distances from the Earth.
Stars • What is a star? • Most stars look like faint dots of light in the night sky. But stars are actually huge, hot, glowing gases that produce their own heat and light.
So Bright! • Our sun is only average in brightness and size compared to all the other stars in the universe • For Example, the star Deneb, is close to 200,000 times brighter and 200 times larger than the sun. • These stars are extremely far away, making them appear dimmer. • Deneb appears fainter than the sun because it is a much greater distance from Earth than the Sun.
Factors that influence brightness • 1. Distance • 2. Size
Misconception Alert • Some may incorrectly interpret that stars that are farthest away are always the dimmest in the night sky. • Remember that the size of a star must be considered when discussing the brightness of stars. • Some of the farthest stars are brighter than stars that are closer because they are larger.
Term to know: Light-year • Light year is not a measure of time, but of distance.. • A light year is the distance light travels in a year. • This is the distance light must travel to reach Earth.
types and classifications of stars • Blue Giant- a blueish star that has a high surface temperature and a diameter that is large relative to t he sun. • Super Giant- a very large star that is even brighter than a giant, often despite being relatively school. • Red Giant- a very large star of high luminosity and low surface temperature. • White Dwarf- a small very dense star that is typically the size of a planet.
