2. Office of the Director (LM-1) Office of Business Operations (LM-10) Office of Site Operations (LM-20) Mission:To manage the Department’s post-closure responsibilities and ensure future protection of human health and the environment. This Office has control and custody for legacy land, structures, and facilities and is responsible for maintaining them at levels suitable for their long-term use.

4. UMTRA Title I and Title II Disposal and Processing Sites There are 36 Uranium Mill Tailings Radiation Control Act (UMTRCA) Title I and Title II processing or disposal sites managed LM. Twenty-two inactive uranium ore-processing sites were remediated resulting in the creation of 19 disposal cells. Active ground water remediation is ongoing at Monument Valley, AZ, Shiprock, NM, and Tuba City, AZ.
5. Shiprock, New Mexico, Disposal Site The Shiprock Site, a former uranium and vanadium ore-processing facility, is located near the town of Shiprock, New Mexico approximately 28 miles west of Farmington. Compliance strategies include active remediation, natural flushing, and institutional controls. The contaminants of concern are ammonia, manganese, nitrate, selenium, strontium, sulfate, and uranium.
6. Sherwood, Washington, Disposal Site The Sherwood Disposal Site, a former uranium-ore processing site, is located in eastern Washington on the Spokane Indian Reservation, about 35 miles northwest of the city of Spokane. No contamination has been detected in ground water downgradient of the disposal cell and no ground water remediation is planned. DOE conducts annual ground water monitoring at one background well and two downgradient wells as a best management practice.
7. CERCLA/RCRASites There are 8 sites managed LM where remediation was conducted in accordance with Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) and/or Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) regulations . These sites were radiologically and/or chemically contaminated by federal milling, processing, research, and/or weapons manufacturing operations
8. Mound Site, Miamisburg, Ohio The Mound Site is a former weapons component manufacturing facility located in Miamisburg, Ohio about 10 miles southwest of Dayton. The Office of Environmental Management is responsible for the cleanup and closure of the Mound Site. Legacy Management accepted responsibility for site management in 2006.
9. FUSRAP Sites There are 29 Formerly Utilized Sites Remedial Action Program (FUSRAP) managed by LM. These are sites where radioactive contamination remained from Manhattan Project and early U.S. Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) operations When required, remediation is performed either by the DOE or the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. FUSRAP sites transfer to LM for long-term care once remediation is completed
10. Nevada OffsitesSites There are 9 sites where underground nuclear tests and experiments were performed outside of the Nevada Test Site (Nevada Offsites). Long-term monitoring activities consist primarily of ensuring that use restrictions remain in force and maintaining site integrity to protect public health and the environment.
11. Salmon, Mississippi, Site The Salmon Site, formerly called the Tatum Dome Test Site, is 21 miles southwest of Hattiesburg, Mississippi. The State of Mississippi is acquiring surface ownership of the site. The State intends to harvest trees from the site for commercial sale as part of the forest management plan for the site.
12. Gas Buggy, New Mexico, Site The Gasbuggy Site is located approximately 55 miles east of the city of Farmington and approximately 12 miles southwest of Dulce, New Mexico. Groundwater and surface water samples are collected annually and analyzed for gamma-emitting nuclides and tritium. Natural gas samples are collected and analyzed for carbon-14 and tritium.
13. D&DSites There are 5 sites in the DOE Defense Decontamination and Decommissioning (D&D) Program. The decommissioned Boiling Nuclear Superheater (BONUS) research reactor in Rincón, Puerto Rico, is included because the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission constructed and entombed the reactor under a program similar to the one used for the Piqua and Hallam reactors.
14. Legacy Management Sites Current Sites There are 96 site managed by OLM. There are 44 sites that have analytical support requirements. Identified Sites Not Yet Transferred There are 57 sites identified for transfer to Legacy Management.

17. Analytical Services Contracts Analytical services were procured utilizing the ICPT Basic Ordering Agreement along with an LM-specific requirements document. Contracts with GEL Laboratories, ALS Laboratory Group, and TestAmerica were awarded March 2008. The total dollar amount of the contracts for FY2009 was 760K. FY2010 estimated total is 835K. A Staged Electronic Data Deliverable (SEDD) is required under these contracts. Other contracts for special analytical services and site-specific requirements are established as needed.
18. DOECAP Participation Legacy Management currently has three DOECAP auditors. Quality Assurance Management Systems and General Laboratory Practices Data Quality for Organic Analyses Data Quality for Inorganic and Wet Chemistry Analyses Data Quality for Radiochemistry Analyses Laboratory Information Management Systems/Electronic Data Deliverables Hazardous and Radioactive Materials Management
19. Legacy Management Status Summary The number of samples submitted to contract laboratories has stabilized. Large increases in the number of samples is not anticipated in the near future. Legacy Management will rely on DOECAP as the primary provider of laboratory audits.
