What is sonata-allegro form? • Sonata-allegro form comes from a development of the Classical Era • Sonata-allegro form can be described as an ABA’ form • The A section is the EXPOSITION • The B section is the DEVELOPMENT • The A’ section is the RECAPITULATION Exposition Development Recapitulation
Exposition (A) • The EXPOSITION contains • Theme I in the tonic key • Transition • Theme II in the dominant key • Closing section Exposition Development Recapitulation
Development (B) • The DEVELOPMENT is an open and free-form section of the Sonata-Allegro form • This section is based on thematic materials from the Exposition Exposition Development Recapitulation
Recapitulation (A’) • The RECAPITULATION returns to the structure of the EXPOSITION with one exception: • Theme I in tonic • Transition • Theme II in tonic • Closing Exposition Development Recapitulation
