Detailed account of NCSX Modular Coil Mechanical Test Program, encompassing various tests conducted at CTD. Tests include tension, compression, flexural, and thermal expansion tests for single modular conductor coils, as well as shear tests for 2x2 modular coil bundles. Results and observations from completed tests are discussed, highlighting key findings related to insulation materials, strength, modulus data, and failure modes.

Summary of NCSX Modular Coil Mechanical Test Program I. Zatz & J. Chrzanowski July 2, 2003
Test Program at CTD incorporates the following tests: For a single modular conductor coil (at multiple temperatures): • Tension tests • Compression tests • Flexural tests • Thermal expansion For a 2x2 modular coil bundle: • Shear tests • Flexural tests VPI shrinkage evaluation
Tests completed to date: • Single modular coil compression tests • Single modular coil flexural tests • VPI shrinkage evaluation In progress: • Single modular coil tension tests
Results (to date): Single modular coil compression tests: Insulation materials dominate behavior. Strength ≈ 25 ksi @ R.T. Strength 40 ksi min. @ temps ≤ 150K Modulus data erratic Failure mode either insulation split or unwrap
Results (to date): Single modular coil flexural tests: Both copper and insulation affect behavior Both flexural directions tested Strength 27 ksi min. @ R.T. Strength 38 ksi min. @ temps ≤ 150K Modulus data consistent Failure mode: Shear at insulation/kapton interface Observation: More pronounced cracking at cryo temperatures
