UNC Minimum Course Requirements – For Undergraduate Admission to the 17 Campuses
Picking the Right College For Me • Compare Colleges by visiting in person and by their websites. • Look for things that are important to you. • The best time to visit a college is whenever the main student body is present. Take the official tour and then take your own tour. Visit residence halls to see what the rooms are like, and eat in the cafeteria! Above all, be sure to VISIT!
Evaluate Your Options • UNC Institutional Profiles: available on the web and provide admissions information for all 16 public universities. • Visit www.northcarolina.edu/content.php/assessment/reports/profiles/current.htm for the current profile.
Recommendation LettersRecommendation letters have never carried much weight in our admissions process, and we have never required them except for the 2-year Agricultural Institute and Professional Golf Management program. We do not encourage applicants to submit letters of recommendation, but many do submit them in large quantities. We often receive a large number of recommendation letters for an individual student that adds little or nothing to the review of their application. Until now, we have had to link these to the applicant's file and that has become a large burden for our process with little added value. For these reasons, we have decided to only include in applications the unsolicited recommendation letters which are uploaded by the applicants directly to their application through wolfPAW. Letters submitted via mail, e-mail, fax, etc. will not be added to the student’s application. Thomas GriffinDirector of Undergraduate Admissions
Become BRAG-WORTHY In your essays and/or interviews, turn the things you are proud of into stories. (Klaus, 2003)
Nobody’s perfect. • When you make a mistake, look for lessons (and privately journal about them). • “Don’t blow it” on Facebook or Twitter! Be careful what you post! • Instead of “status updates”, why not journal as a way to collect memories that can help you write, reflect, and articulate your experiences (on essays and in interviews)?
PAUSE BEFORE YOU POST • Who will be able to see what I post? • Will anyone be embarrassed or hurt by what I post? • What will my family or teachers say if they see what I post? • How will I feel if the head of my dream job or school sees what I post? • How would I feel if what I post get in the news? • Am I proud of what I’m posting? ~Patchin & Hinduja (2011) and Jostens.com/infotoknow
