  9. V. Ziemann: CAI at SFAIR meeting in Uppsala XFEL related activities • Following the withdrawal of funding for CELSIUS and CRYRING the university heads of UU+SU+KTH sponsored the creation of a joint center for research in Free-electron laser related issues (2005, 3x3x1.5 MSeK) • Three projects following workshop in Kista (Nov 2004) • Precision fiducialization for special magnets • Surface physics in small beam pipes (short bunches and resistive wakes) • Optical Replica Synthesizer to measure ultra-short electron bunches in FLASH • Spin-off: XFEL laser heater as Swedish in-kind contri-bution to the constrution of the EuXFEL

  10. V. Ziemann: CAI at SFAIR meeting in Uppsala Optical Replica Synthesizer • Problem: measure ultra-short bunches in the 10s of fs range: EOS, TEO, LOLA, ORS • too fast for electronics (10 Gs/s, 100 ps) • but laser folks know (autocorrelation, FROG) • Solution: make an optical copy of the electron bunch and analyze that with laser methods.

  11. V. Ziemann: CAI at SFAIR meeting in Uppsala OTR on camera while 200 fs laserpulse passes through electron bunch

  12. V. Ziemann: CAI at SFAIR meeting in Uppsala ...finally: Single-shot FROGs • ORS is rebuilt into the SFLASH beam line • G. Angelova received fo-ass to work on electron-laser interaction • New postdoc from UniDo • Show goes on • Need to make it into standard operation device

  13. V. Ziemann: CAI at SFAIR meeting in Uppsala XFEL Laser Heater • Electrons are born very cold (3 keV) • susceptible to plasma oscillation instabilities • Add Landau damping (decoherence) in a well controlled way • Laser Heater • Swedish in-kind contribution Just hiring...

  14. V. Ziemann: CAI at SFAIR meeting in Uppsala ESS and Uppsala • European (5 MW Neutron) Spallation Source will be built in Lund • Finance volume: ~15 GSeK, 1 GSeK/y • 3-4 y design + 5 y construction (+ 5 y) • First beams ~2019, Last beams ~2066 • How can we attract a part of the development work to Uppsala? • ESS (ML) suggested that we take responsibility for the radio-frequency distribution system of the ESS • Local: T. Ekelöf, R. Ruber, V. Ziemann • LOI from UU rektor Anders Hallberg to ESS (July 2009)
