How Does Earth’s Surface Change • Chemical Weathering • Physical Weathering • Erosion • Volcanoes • Earthquakes PhysicalWeathering Volcano ChemicalWeathering Erosion
Chemical Weathering • Causes rocks to change into different materials • Acid rain weathers rocks • Water and warm temperatures cause chemical weathering
Physical Weathering • Breaks rocks into smaller pieces • Plant roots split soil and rocks • Ice causes a water bottle to change shape
Erosion • Movement of weathered material
Volcanoes • Cone-shaped • Forms weak spots in Earth’s surface • Erupts when magma reaches surface • Pressure builds up so gasses explode
Earthquakes • Earth’s outer layer ,the crust, is on top of the upper mantle • Faults are breaks or cracks in rocks where Earth’s plates can move • Earthquakes are sudden movements that cause Earth’s crust to shake • Vibrations move as waves through Earth’s surface
Fun Facts • The order of size for rocks from greatest to least is: Boulder - 300 mm, Cobble - 100 mm, Pebble - 30 mm, Sand – 1mm, silt, and clay. • Rivers erode rocks and soil, and they carry sand, silt, mud, and clay to new places
